supplement essay? what?

In most supplements there is the generic question... Explain why --- is a good match for your academic and personal goals.

what do you write about? your expected area of study and extracurriculars?

is this some kind of trick question

It's not a trick question; they just want to make sure that you've looked into the school and that it's a good fit for you. Try to break down the prompt:
1) what are your academic and personal goals?
2) what do you know about this school?
3) how will the school give you the opportunity to meet your goals?

For example, you might mention, "College X has an amazing Pancake-Flipping program, and I've always wanted to pursue advanced work in Breakfast Foods Preparation, so this should give me a solid foundation." Or, "College X has a fantastic orchestra, so I'll be able to continue playing viola, which I've played for seven years." Or, "I've always lived in the city, so College X's rural location is an exciting change of scenery." Give specific details about the school and talk about how they relate to who you are and who you want to become.
