supplement essay

Is it just me, or is this worded badly:
"Please submit a one-page, single-spaced essay that explains why you have chosen Carnegie Mellon your particular major(s), department(s) or program(s). "

Should I explain TO cmu about why I like my major, or is it why I chose cmu FOR my major? Basically, should I just talk about my major or do I need to explain why cmu is so special to me?

I talked about why I liked CMU, why I like my major, and why I thought CMU would be a good place for my major. But I don't know if I've been accepted yet so you may not want to listen to me...

I think you should talk about why you like CMU in the context of your prospective majors. You don't have to talk about how much you love Pittsburgh or the fence. It's been a couple of years, but I don't recall my son going into any great detail.

if you go on to read the question it says this essay should include reasons why you chose your major.

anyways, exactly how much are we supposed to talk about CMU? I spent like 90% of my essay talking about my influences and why I've chosen my major/what I want to go into, but only mentioned a little bit about CMU. Is this supposed to be a "why CMU" essay as well?

If I don't mention at all WHY I picked CMU, but I just explain my interests in my major, that's not a big issue, right?

Yeah, I don't think it'd be an issue. I mean, CMU even explicitly says there that your essay should include reasons why you picked your major/departments/programs. I think they care more about what you're interested in (why you picked your major). Although I suppose it cannot hurt to mention CMU a few times in your essay :P.

I used a paragraph to explain why I want to go to CMU, and the rest of the essay is about my love for math and econ. I think it's important to express why you want to go to CMU. My advice would be to definitely mention your reasons for picking CMU. I strongly agree with mathmom.

In the print preview I found the answer: "Please submit a one-page, single-spaced essay that explains why you have chosen Carnegie Mellon AND your particular major(s), department(s) or program(s)"

For some reason they left off the word 'and' in the question on the online supplement.

although I'd like for a lot of you to mess your essays up (to boost my own chances ^_^), I'm going to be nice and repeat what the above have said. I asked the same question through email because the prompt was obviously missing an "and".

"Thanks for your email to the Carnegie Mellon University Office of Admission.

The exact phrase on the application is "explains why you have chosen Carnegie Mellon and your particular major(s), department(s) or program(s)."

You should concentrate on why you are interested in the particular program you have applied to and specifically why you are interested in that program at Carnegie Mellon. If you are applying to multiple programs, please address each program with a seperate paragraph in the essay.

Best regards from Carnegie Mellon's Office of Admission."

basically, they stressed the fact that you need to metion "specifically why you are interested in that program at Carnegie Mellon". If you don't, you've only answered half the question.

I already submitted, so I probably shouldn't try to worry myself. I only briefly mentioned that I hope to expand my learning at CMU. It seemed pointless to describe WHY I want to go there, because the main reasons would be: it's a good school and will give me a good education.

^ that's true. I'll probably end up inserting a few lines about why i like CMU, but that's about it. this thread has been pretty helpful.
