Hi,
So I applied to SDSU for Fall 2015 and completed my supplemental application before the deadline. I am currently a senior at SFSU, having transferred from a CCC (and thus I have already completed all the minimum CSU requirements).
On my supplemental application, I was asked about any classes I was going to take this spring semester. I listed 5 of them, all of which are just classes needed for my major. I ended up dropping one of these classes a week ago, however, and I’m now worried about the discrepancy on my supplemental application. The class I dropped was NOT a required class for transfer… it was just an elective for my major. Do you think this will be an issue, provided that I get accepted to SDSU?
So long as you have the minimum 60 units to transfer and it is not one of the required “golden four” courses necessary to satisfy the GE requirement, you should be ok. They anticipate people not being able to get into all classes they plan to take. Did you drop your course because you didn’t need it?
Wait, was it a major prep course? I’m confused after re-reading your original post.
@raychill89 No, it wasn’t a major prep course. At my current school, I am an English Literature major, but I actually applied to SDSU as a Linguistics major, and the only prepatory course work I apparently need is an introductory course in Linguistics, which I have already taken at SFSU: http://arweb.sdsu.edu/es/admissions/majors/linguistics.htm
I’m actually thinking that if I do get accepted into SDSU, I’m going to try and switch my major to English Literature. Do you know if this will be a difficult task? I have taken several Linguistics classes as I once was a Linguistics major, but I switched to English Lit after I found out this semester that they didn’t offer a couple of classes I really needed. I applied to SDSU in November, before I switched my major from Linguistics to English Lit.
Thanks for replying
@kittenfarts You should be fine then!
SDSU states on their website that transfers are not able to change their majors, however, it is still possible. It is up to the school though, from my understanding. In your case, the Department of English and Comparative Literature would have to determine if they have a seat available for you in their school. From what I have heard, it’s not a difficult process but again, it’s up to the school. You can call them directly and they should be able to give you more insight. Good luck!
This is the Department of English and Comparative Literature’s number: (619) 594-5307
@raychill89 Thanks for the number. It might sound a little confusing because at my school, Literature and Linguistics. fall into one general category: English. So It’s either major in English with a concentration in Lit, or with a concentration in Linguistics. Both concentrations require the same core classes, but different electives. That’s probably why it’s been so easy for me to switch back and forth this far into my schooling. SDSU offers English and Linguistics as two separate majors. I honestly don’t mind finishing with a degree in either… it’s not likely I’ll get a solid career fresh out of college with a humanities degree anyways haha!
I’m definitely more worried about even being able to get in to SDSU… my GPA is a 3.01 8-| I’m originally from San Diego and I really want to move back home and be closer to my family and friends. I really don’t like it up here in SF and even though I only have a year left until graduation (if I stay), I’d rather move back home and take an extra semester or year if needed. At least I can afford to live in SD!
I thought that was strange! I always thought Linguistics fell into the English major, but as you said, SDSU has 2 separate majors for Linguistics and English Lit. Weird! Well, I am wishing you the very best! Good luck to you during the admissions process.
@raychill Good luck to you too!
