is sending in supplementary material, like music recordings just a waste of time? if you're not applying to be a music major, and you're not incredibly awesome at your instrument, is it worth actually making one and still sending it in? and also, is photocopying awards and sending that in ok? or is listing it on your awards & achievement part of your app enough.. wow so many questions. sorrryyy got carried away

Don't send supplementary material unless you're very good to excellent, and have a passion for it.

As for awards, if they are state/regional/national send a copy in to your schools.

My daughter sent in supplementary material to colleges that made it clear that it was acceptable, and she was admitted to 2 colleges that we felt were real reaches for her (Barnard & Chicago). We'll never know whether it helped or not, but it obviously didn't hurt. One thing she sent was a DVD with about 3 minutes excerpted from 2 dance pieces she choreographed; her stuff was good, but not "incredibly awesome".

colleges don't want to be deluged by extra stuff; the "why not send it in, can't hurt" mentality is completely wrong. As Stanford writes in it's FAQ
[quote]
Applicants with extraordinary talent in the fine or performing arts who intend to participate and/or study in one of the arts areas while at Stanford, even if not majoring in the arts, may submit supplementary materials following specific guidelines for review by appropriate faculty members. Such applicants are expected to have previously received significant recognition for their talent, usually at the regional, state, national or international level.

I've read that if you send in this material they will route it to a faculty member for evaluation; and if it's pretty mediocre you're going to get a blistering evaluation from that prof who is angry you wasted their time, pretty much killing your chances of admission at elite schools.

oh, okay. yeah i don't have an "extraordinary" talent.. i mean i'm not BAD but definitely not one of the nation's best so neverminddddd. haha thanks for the replies
