Hi I have a question regarding the supplement asking to write about something that surprised, challenged or unsettled you.

The body of music that I want to write about (not what I am actually going to write for my supplement) that unsettled me contains swear words and graphic imagery (a part of why it unsettled me). Would that be held against me if admissions officers actually go and listen to the song? Is this too risky? Should I write about something else?

It’s sometimes hard to write about popular music because it’s so popular. I hate to say it, but a lot of students writing in generalities and fail to be personal, which makes all those essays seem pretty generic.

You CAN write about popular music, but you have to work hard to distinguish your voice.

Also remember that you are supposed to being writing about how that work affected you. Swear words or graphic imagery in themselves are unsettling. That’s obvious and pointing that out might be a little too simplistic. If you’re going to do this, go beyond the obvious. Go for something very personal.

In my opinion, people respect boldness. That is why everyone LOVED Simon Cowell and didn’t care as much for Randy or Paula. He told the truth, he was bold, and he said what he thought. See what I mean?

I can’t see that being held against you.

The admissions committee can handle it…they are adults. And they might even respect you for being so daring (as long as it is in good taste)!

Go for it! You never get to the top without taking risks!
