UVA requires this supplement essay: What work of art, music, science, mathematics, or literature has surprised, unsettled, or challenged you, and in what way?

I'm wondering, what did you guys all write?
I really need to get started on this and I still can't think of something "interesting" to write about.

dimpleyy, don't worry about interesting. answer the question.

What work of art, music, science, mathematics, or literature has surprised, unsettled, or challenged you, and in what way?

the work doesn't have to be bold or innovative. it could be a book about Barney.. or Womanizer (aside: did anyone see Britney's interview tonight? love that girl.). or 4,5-dimethyl-3-ethylheptane. or Buchberger's algorithm. you could write about poop for god's sake. just write about something meaninful to you and how it's meaningful.

in all honesty, I hope no one says what they wrote about. because we might prime you to write about something that you don't give a rat's butt about. spend a day or two looking around (not intensely searching; just calmly observing) to see if anything sparks.

I personally think people over think the topic and then rush through the writing when it should be the other way around. The topic should come to you in a snap...go with your gut instinct. What should take some time is figuring out how you're going to make that topic personal.

Don't write a book report, describe the colors in a painting, or explain the historical context for your topic. Talk about your reaction to the work or what it did to/for you.
