Supplies & Textbooks

For textbooks, should I buy them before moving day or once I get to campus? Where and how do I buy this?

For school supplies, do I just bring the usual stuff from home? Notebooks, folder, pens etc... its just what I need correct?

hey, I’m a transfer student for this fall and I’ll be a sophomore at Rutgers. From my experience, DO NOT buy the textbooks at the school bookstore. Also, if you can, wait until after the first day of class. Some teachers do not even use the textbook once and before you know it you’ve wasted $100 on a book you’re never going to open. Use websites like amazon, chegg, collegebookrenter. you’ll save hundreds of dollars by renting from these sites. RENT, don’t buy.

and yes, get the average school supplies you used in high school. you’ll be fine

Go here: [Your Customized Textbook List - Barnes and Noble at Rutgers University Bookstore](<a href=“Find Course Materials | Rutgers University Official Bookstore”>Find Course Materials | Rutgers University Official Bookstore) put in your classes then put your isbn number into amazon (or whatever site you like). Buy the cheapest used, and buy them now so you can do cheapest shipping and still get them in time. What you should absolutely not do is buy from bookstores on campus

For school supplies it really depends on how you study. I don’t like binders, so I buy 2-3 five subject fivestar notebooks, a case of pencils and a case of highlighters. I suppose have a pen or two is handy

Half.com is your friend.

Thanks for the reply, appreciate it.

Do you suggest I buy by stuff tomorrow when my schedule is released or wait until school begins and then order it?

Definitely buy them before school starts. It takes some time for your books to be delivered. If you decide to go to NJ Books or The Rutgers Bookstore, those stores will be completely packed the first week of school…and you don’t want that.

I would make a list of the book you need with the ISBN numbers by going onto the Rutgers Bookstore website and putting in your class info. Then print this list out. Then shop around on amazon.com, half.com, and see if you can get any of the books cheaper that way. The rest you can order through the Rutgers Bookstore website and they will be waiting for you to pick up.

You have about 2 weeks in which to return the books you don’t want at the bookstore so keep your receipts and don’t open any packages until you are sure you are keeping the books. Some professors let you use older editions so you may want to wait until the first day of class to see what you actually need.

Also note if the book you need says “w/access”. This means that you must purchase an online access code to use for homework, etc. If you purchase the package from the bookstore, it is included. If you purchase a used book, you may have to purchase the access code separately because it probably has already been used. In my experience, access codes are usually ~$30-$40, so if you are buying a used book make sure it is cheap enough to warrant paying extra for the access code.

You can also go to the publisher’s website (eg Pearson or Cengage) to look for the price of the online access. Sometimes the package price new, through the publisher’s website (rather than the Rutgers bookstore or amazon), is a better deal. So look carefully.

Also check shipping times: sometimes the publisher can ship faster than amazon (days rather than weeks).

Hey I just went into the bookstore to figure out what books are required, btw side quesiton do I need the reccomended stuff?

Main question: Some of the books dont even show up on other websites.
For example,

01:160:161

Thats the course, I cant find the books that it said are required on other websites.

9780077618599
9780077923747

Those are the ISBNS.

Sometimes the ISBNs are for editions of the textbooks which are customized for Rutgers. Usually the regular version of these textbooks is perfectly fine and typically cheaper than the “Rutgers edition.” If you are going to buy on Amazon or elsewhere, try searching by the textbook name rather than ISBN.

[Your Customized Textbook List - Barnes and Noble at Rutgers University Bookstore](<a href=“Find Course Materials | Rutgers University Official Bookstore”>Find Course Materials | Rutgers University Official Bookstore)

[New Jersey Books - Textbooks](http://store350.collegestoreonline.com/ePOS?store=350&form=shared3%2Ftextbooks%2Ftext_browse.html&design=350&campus=MAIN)

These are usually up to date because the professors submit the books to them so the bookstore can order the books before the semester starts.

If the book is customized or bundled with other products in any way (online access codes, study guides) it will have it’s own ISBN number that is different from the actual book alone. Also, international, hardcover, softcover, and spiral bound editions all have their own ISBN number.

It makes it difficult to compare prices because you have to know exactly what you are comparing. Sometimes you have to visit the bookstore to see what the bundle includes before you can compare prices.

My pet peeve is ‘custom editions’. Usually they are still expensive, you can’t sell them to other students afterwards because it is good only for that instructor’s sections, and amazon won’t buy them back.

(01:160:161) Section 40

If you enter that in, and look at the books that come up as required, whats the diffrence between both of them? Are they even two diffrent books? One cost 40 more than the other, i just dont want to waste an extra 100 if those are the same books.

The reason the second one cost more is because it comes with the Student Solution Manual ("+SSM")

Wow I was about to ask the same question for the same class.

Cady does that mean we do not need the other one even though they both say “required”

for those looking to buy the Cal book (135 course) I found this on Amazon… I think it is the same book

[Calculus Volume 1 - Custom Edition for Math 135 Rutgers University: Monty Strauss: 9780536260710: Amazon.com: Books](http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0536260710/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&seller=)

Pratik that is odd. Of course you wouldn’t have to buy both since that would mean doubling up on the text and online access code. Usually, study manuals are not required. I am guessing that the text plus access code is all that is actually ‘required’.

just wait till you get the syllabus because i heard the math department just updated their editions where the hw problems might be ordered different or might even be different problems.

One thing i noticed is that students who aren’t able to sell their books are more willing to negoiate prices down.

So, you can probably wait and search on the rutgers groups and find a person and see if they are selling a book and offer something less they ask but don’t lowball them.

Hi im going to be in pre-calc.

What calculator should I buy?

I ordered my textbook already, it wont come with that will it?

Ti-84, when i took pre-cal 115 i remember using a calculator for my final so im guessing you can use it.

You will not be able to use Ti-89, when i took the class someone was using it on the final and they took his exam away after 1hr into the exam and then made him retake it on another day.
