Hi! I am curious about whether or not a supply chain management (or a business admin) degree is the best degree for eventually getting into a higher-tier MBA program. I know the GMAT doesn’t test actual business skills, so I am wondering if an economics major would be more beneficial. I am looking at reasonably prestigious schools (Clemson, Fordham, OSU, Texas A&M, etc) if that helps any! Thank you!
GMAT score is based on the Quant + Verbal. From taking the GMAT, I don’t think Econ math really matters or would help much, it’s all high school math like Geometry & knowing powers. Econ might help with the critical thinking for verbal & IR (which isn’t calculated in the overall score). I think Supply Chain & Econ have different career paths and I’d base it on what you want to do. GMAT can just be studied for on its own.
You can get into a good MBA program with any undergraduate major – it doesn’t even have to be business. My H got his MBA at Wharton and the class included engineers, an opera singer, two fighter pilots, English majors etc. as well as undergraduate business and econ. majors. What matters most will be your: 1) undergraduate GPA 2) GMAT score (study by getting a review book, taking a course etc.) 3) work experiences 4) essays, LORs etc.
So bottom line is if you are interested in supply chain management and are successful in those classes then go for it. If you are interested in something else that is fine as well.
Both economics and supply chain management degrees will normally have one or two calculus classes as part of the core curriculum, and that will help further your textbook mathematical knowledge for standardized testing.
Thank you all so much for your help!!!
