^ Trio EAs seems to be a popular option (my son did this) and all three of these schools are very attractive to a certain type of student.
I actually applied in late November, around the 20th. Still, I definitely wasn’t expecting to hear back so soon! I thought most LLs come out in February or early March.
“I am curious when OP submitted her application. Lots of schools don’t start reviewing the apps till after the deadline. A decision in less than 10 days is indeed lightening fast! Congratulations to OP!”
The fact that they sent OP the LL when they did signals that they’ve already been looking at RD. Guessing they have EDII wrapped up - the deadline for switching from Regular has now passed.
Good article on the LL topic, btw:

Alternatively, they may have a method of flagging LL prospects in the RD pool before wrapping up ED II review and starting to look at RD pool.
^ Could be. A lot might depend on number of new EDII vs. deferred. The deferreds are probably a quicker re-read since they’ve been looked at before. All this is speculation of course. Who knows how it all really works :-??
The same thing happened to me!!! I just got accepted and I applied Jan 2nd. I am so confused bc I wrote my essays the day the application was due, and I am super average. Congrats!
@tiredstudent1 - c’mon don’t keep us in suspense - tell us about your super-average self! ;))
Congrats, by the way! =D> :D/
Yay! Congrats to all on your acceptances! Speaking of ‘average,’ my son feels like an ‘average’ student now that he is at UChicago. It sounds funny, but I’m glad he is considered average now, because he is literally surrounded by like-minded students. It really propels and perpetuates his intellect in a way that is very condensed for the next 4 fours. I especially enjoy hearing about his discussions with other students and also enjoy reading some of the writing he has done. (Not to mention he is really loving college life in general there.)
Enjoy your time there as an ‘average’ person!
thank u!! here are some stats
act: 33 composite / 35 superscore
gpa: 3.85 unweighted/ 4.21 weighted
class rank: top 5%
APs: ap world 4 ap lit 5 ap stat 5 ap us gov 4 ap comparative gov 3
taking ap bio and ap us history this year
extracurricular: cross country, theater, stuco, social justice club, leadership organizations, mock trial, model UN
ethnicity: 25% mexican
my brother goes to uchicago also
@tiredstudent1 - doesn’t sound very average to me! Congrats again. Hopefully the “sibling-hook” will also work for my son who wants to join his older sister at UChicago.
Thank you! This post made me even more excited! I’m glad he’s loving UChicago, and I am excited to feel average as well next year. Hopefully I experience the same intellectual stimulation he does!
@carey46 @tiredstudent1 Congratulations! You sound like an incredible candidate, and UChicago most certainly extends early acceptances to students they love!
FYI My sons’ high school had a Naviance tracking system, and for most top colleges, all the accepted students fell into a tight cluster. UChicago was an exception - the school had a more varied scattergram in terms of gpas and test scores. Now that I have met my son’s friends and suite mates, I see a much more common thread. These kids get involved and have a passion for debating all ideas;) I am shocked at how much fun my son is having while also working harder than ever.
My older son is at Yale, so it’s interesting to compare these two schools. They are comparable in so many ways. UChicago has a slightly more academic vibe, and its career services are simply unmatched anywhere else.
On an unrelated matter, WashU was my personal favorite school when I took my kids on their college tours;) Sounds like you will have options - enjoy!
Don’t think about how you got in. Just make sure you are a good fit. My kid (no hooks) also was the only kid who got into HYPSM in his class, and frankly, there were around 25 kids in his class who had higher GPAs, and 75 kids from his high school who applied to Stanford got denied. My kid just coasted by with many A-s and two B+s. He doesn’t know how he got in either, but it might be because AO liked his personality, ability to appreciate others and humbleness. He was shocked that he got in, whereas I thought he had a decent chance to get in. He doesn’t get those qualities from me for sure. He’s pretty happy and likes all his classes at Stanford.
In short, the way you perceive yourself might differ from the way older or more experienced people perceive you. My kid rarely impresses kids his age, but he almost always has an effect of impressing older people he encounters. Who knows, you might be the same way.
I would not say my kid is surrounded by so many like minded students at Stanford, but Stanford kids are varied enough for most kids to find some like minded people.
Did everyone receive an email saying
“On behalf of myself and all of the admissions counselors here at UChicago, I would like to thank you for the time and consideration you put into your application.”
… did people who were accepted receive this? I feel like this is foreshadowing bad news … too scared to open my decision.
- for the ED2 round, yes everyone should have received the same e-mail message, regardless of outcome.
““On behalf of myself …” When people say (or write) this, is crack me up
@carey46 could you PM me your essays?
I hope you got in
