usually the parents start the “class of” board around April. …did I miss it?
I was waiting until June 1 but I can do it now
I was wondering this, too. I feel like the CC “neighborhood” has changed a bit in the last few years and not sure why. When I joined here 8ish years ago we all got to “know” each other well, there was a lot more sharing, many more willing to share experiences and Final Decisions; now it feels like there are more “lurkers.” Is it because of the explosion in coaching and less of a need for info? I’ve also been told that there are PA high schools that “forbid” their students (or families) to join CC. (eyeroll) Don’t know how prevalent that is or how they would know since we don’t use our real names, but it is a thing. There also was a period a year or two ago when there were a few bad apples here and things got nasty, but it was an anomaly and dealt with. Whatever, I will say, having a kid that just graduated from a BFA MT program, that though there is occasional misinformation (which is usually corrected quickly by someone), CC is a WEALTH of useful information and I personally wouldn’t have survived without it when my daughter was applying. #forevergratefultoCC
My kids have all done the PA HS (1/2 days) and no one forbids CC. However, there are many parents who feel it creates too much stress/drama. My D’s voice teacher is NOT a fan but I have met some great people, and have gotten invaluable insight, from these boards. There will always be a few bad apples - or people posting to stir up controversy - but I find it’s not nearly as bad as the general CC threads!
I have been a lurker for the past 6 months or so and haven’t had much to contribute as I’m new to all of this. That said, I am SOOOOO thankful to have found CC and all of you who have generously shared your experiences. I have a rising senior this year so we are heading into the year of insanity, and I’m sure we’ll start having more to share as we actually experience the process.
Hello! I’ve been reading CC posts for the past three or so years and i’m so glad to be heading into the process myself! Best of luck to everyone through this hectic process!
I mostly lurk as well, but it’s because I don’t feel like I have that much to add yet, as my D is just finishing her freshman year of HS. I chime in when I feel like I have actual firsthand knowledge to add (like about summer programs my D has attended), but mostly I am learning a ton from the more experienced parents here and am so incredibly grateful that people have been so generous with sharing what they have learned.
Having said that, my D does attend a PA school, and I will say that the teachers do speak very negatively of both CC and of coaching, and they warn the kids off of both. I take it with a grain of salt, though, since the vast majority of things I read on CC turn out to be correct, and the kids with coaches typically do pretty darn well in the college audition process. Of course that doesn’t mean you have to be on CC or have a coach to be successful, but it clearly doesn’t “ruin” a student’s chances like some teachers would have you believe, lol.
I read the MT threads but don’t participate for the most part because my son’s choice, teching, doesn’t appear to be really addressed in the forum. I looked through all the acceptances and didn’t see one person posting about a student who was pursuing a BFA in the tech area, as my son is. I didn’t feel comfortable inserting myself in there, for the most part, although I did sometimes offer a reply to something I could specifically answer. So I confined myself to the 3.0 - 3.4 GPA thread, which fits him academically, though not major wise, and is full of warm and probably really nice in real life people. The MT forum could be a little more inclusive of those whose choice is to be behind the scenes.
@techmom99 - idk if you have ever wandered over to the theater board (you can find it under college majors) but there are more tech posters over there.
Thanks @toowonderful -
I have been there but didn’t really find that much tech stuff, though there is more than on the regular boards. It’s fine for me, Techson17 has his program, I was actually mentioning it so that going forward, the techies can be included… I don’t believe that excluding them was deliberate, but the way the stats and decision posts were structured didn’t really comport with the tech admission process.
@Calliene … I definitely feel like there is much more “I’ll PM you” and less open and outright sharing. Though I’m sure I’ve been guilty of taking things to a private PM a time or two. But for the most part, I tried to be as open as possible in “public” on CC in hopes of someone else being able to benefit in the future.
What I haven’t really seen a lot of in the last year was what really helped me & my girl in her audition season … Audition Reviews. Those REALLY helped - we’d know a rough layout of what what going to happen in each specific school’s audition. I hope those start up again!
@KaMaMom, few have been as open and honest as you, and I’m sure your posts helped MANY others. You are the epitome of “giving back.” <3
Awww … you’re sweet @Calliene. I think I’ve said this 1,000 times here … I just couldn’t stomach the thought of the anonymous lurker kids (btw … hi lurkers!) looking at all the acceptances here on this board, getting rejections themselves and thinking “what’s wrong with ME?” That’s why (with my daughter’s blessing of course) that I laid her entire audition experience (warts and all) out there/here.
Keeping my fingers crossed that someone will revive the Audition Review thread this coming year!
