Funny, for me it's quite the opposite ;)

Germany

Harvard

Stanford / MIT

Princeton

Yale

Cambridge / Oxford

However, I have to agree with Laila, it absolutely depends on what field you're in. For people working in engineering or IT, MIT, Stanford and Berkeley are probably far more prestigious than Yale or Princeton for example.

[Thomas] Isn't Cambridge well-regarded in engineering and IT ? At least in the area where I work (statistical signal processing, especially Bayesian signal processing), Cambridge probably has the top research group in the world (Godsill, Fitzgerald, formerly Doucet and Andrieu, etc.)
I also tend to think Princeton stands out in the sense that, contrary to other historical Ivies like Harvard and Yale, it does have a very strong electrical and information engineering program, not only in the areas I'm more familiar with like signal processing and information theory (Verdú, Poor, Bede Liu, etc.) , but also in micro/nanoelectronics (see e.g. Daniel Tsui' s recent Nobel prize !).

Don't get me wrong, i don't doubt that Cambridge and Princeton are great schools (even for Engineering/IT), but I was talking solely about prestigue. When it comes to Engineering/IT Stanford, MIT and Cal are the first schools that come to my mind even though other schools may be better in certain areas.

Another thing is that Oxbridge is definitely more well-known throughout Germany or Europe in general, but to me it's not as prestigious as the US universities. I wouldn't really be as impressed by someone having a degree from Oxbridge as I would by someone having a degree from Harvard or MIT.

Philippines

Harvard/Oxford

Yale/Cambridge/UC Berkeley/MIT

Stanford / UCLA / NYU

Australia (on a broad scale)

Harvard (a recent Australian Financial Review - our WSJ - poll of company CEOs found that if they could pick the ideal school to hire from, Harvard was chosen over 50% of time)

Oxford (due to the Rhodes, which has produced many notable leaders, including Prime Minister Bob Hawke)

Cambridge (we're a former British colony; Oxbridge still holds huge weight in the Commonwealth)

Yale (prominent due to the Clintons, the Bushes in recent years; stories on Skull and Bones in 2004 election)

Princeton/Stanford (the former for its traditional power; the latter for the Google guys)

MIT (I'm sorry, but this is really only known by maths and IT people)

I agree with Laila, too:) Coz it relly depends on the "field you'r in";)... But everybody is talking about Engineering/IT what do you think about medicine?
Which one is more prestigious then??

@KING IS HERE

I got a different reception in Korea. Here’s my ranking:

Harvard

Princeton

Yale

Oxford

MIT

Cambridge

Stanford

Stanford is generally unknown in Korean public compared to HYPM. Oxford and MIT are almost brand names as much as HYP are, but just slightly less.

Harvard is a whole new level just like in the States. The H-bomb is at a nuclear level if it is TNT in the States though. Koreans just love Harvard.

Much of the lay prestige of Harvard comes from Harvard Law (6 of 9 current Supreme Court Justices attended, numerous heads of states, widely featured in popular culture, countless leaders in law, business, finance, etc.) and Harvard College (the top feeder to top law, medical, and business schools), followed by HBS (phenomenal global reach and alumni network in business), HMS (a top medical school, though matched by many other medical schools in research and exceeded by a few in primary care), and HKS (alma mater of many top level government officials).
