Stanford v. Oxford for prestige?

Which of these universities do you think is the more prestigious?

Stanford for sure.

Um no. Oxford is way more prestigious. I think Stanford is pretty much ranked higher but the Oxford name always gets that WOW factor similar to the H bomb.

I would say they are equally prestigious. I love both the schools.

Oxford by far

Oxford.

(10 characters)

Depends where you are. In the US, it varies from person to person, though I'd say that overall probably Stanford. Oxford is recognized by most Americans, but it usually doesn't generate the same wow factor as HYPSM. In Europe, though, it's no contest: clearly Oxford. In Asia, it depends. In regions that are/were heavily influenced by the British, such as India, Oxford may be perceived as more prestigious, whereas in other parts of Asia, universities that are strong at the sciences and engineering are more recognized.

Internationally, it goes like this:

1) Oxford
2) Cambridge, Harvard
3) Stanford, Berkeley (yeah, believe it or not Berkley is very well regarded internationally)
4) Yale, Princeton

But that's just name recognition, not a ranking of how good the schools are in reality

That sounds about right Paul. I would add MIT to the mix though. And There isn't a real distinction among all of those schools. They are all very highly regarded and prestigious. To say one is more prestigious than the other flat out is not reasonable.

Undoubtedly, they're both great universities and can't be compared in terms of prestige, but of what I've seen, people regard Stanford above Oxford.

Any University outside of the U.S. is inferior.

You can do what Chelsea Clinton did and go to both

One of my better friends also did that. He majored in Economics at Stanford and then got his Master's degree in Middle Eastern Studies at Oxford.

I think Oxford is more prestigeous on the East Coast at least. But the difference is neglibigle.

Stanford is slightly more prestigious in the United States, and Oxford is slightly more prestigious internationally.

For the general public of most countries in the world, I would definitely say that Oxford is more prestigious (no contest). The name recognition of Oxford is unrivalled, perhaps even by Harvard (but it's close).

However, amongst people who are in the know, I would say Oxford and Stanford are on a par. Stanford perhaps having the edge in Science, but Oxford having the edge in the Arts.

Oxford is prestigious overall. Very competitive to Harvard prestige-wise.

Oxford was created toward the end of the 11th Century and has educated a colossal variety of important figures throughout history. There could be a major in the history of Oxford University. Also, have you ever visited the University? It is the inspiration for Harry Potter. I would say it holds about the same weight as Cambridge, though a little more. And in ranks don't forget Sorbonne. To see the alumni of Oxford go here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_notable_Oxford_students

Wow, Oxford seems to have better alumni than Harvard!

They are really very different schools. International universities are basically what we would consider graduate schools. You get a tough degree in three years and you have to take classes almost exclusively from your subject. My friend decided between Oxford and Yale, and she didn't want to have to decide to do physics and then get stuck in that rut- because you can't get out once you're in... so she went to Yale instead.

But you asked for prestige-wise, so I'd say Stanford in the US and Oxford internationally.
