I don't think that's a yes or no question. Without a doubt, college affects what you do with your life--what you major in, where you go to grad school or a first job, maybe even who you marry--but no, it's not the single determining factor, if that's what you're asking.

Yes, as a parent I lean more towards yes. I personally went to a prestigious university as an undergraduate. My graduate school was a good name but not great. To this day, all I have to say is where I did my undergraduate and people take me more seriously and I have a pre-made reputation. While I know it's what you do with your education that counts, the extra lift you get from the prestige helps.

P.S. I think that either one, undergraduate OR graduate, needs to be a name school. But one should be for that reputation/prestige factor.

No. Its up to the person. If you go to Harvard and don't try much at all, major in something that financially and personally doesn't make you happy and find a job in the same vein, you're going to be unhappy. Of course, then you could change your life and be happy. It's all up to you (but of course, there are always benefits at certain programs/colleges).

No, there are ivy grads who ammounted to nothing and there are grads of no name schools who are/were very sucessful. The degree does not make the person, the person makes use of the degree.

don't do a survey on a forum. you will get biased results as its more likely one will respond if he/she has a more polarized view.

its even worse when the forum more or less devoted to getting into a top college.

further, the survey question should probably be re-worded. the word 'determine' is quite ambiguous. it can imply just giving direction (meaning graduating from a certain college will help or hinder success) or a fixing of the result (meaning graduating from a certain college will result in a certain level of success). further, this isnt necessarily a question about going to a 'good' school. im not sure if that was the intent, but theres a lot at play here.

In general, no...but the college you go to (its name/reputation/education) will have an effect upon your future..but it isn't the single determining factor of success. So, I would answer "no" to your question although it realllly depends on different situations/circumstances.

i recently visited two universities, one prestigious and one not. I sat in on classes at both, and the academic standard at the less prestigious university just wasn't there. I'm not saying this is always true and of course there's responsibility on the student to work, but prestige is a factor.

haha we follow directions so well, don't we?

Thanks, guys. My research topic is meant to perhaps attempt to eliminate the anxiety and pressure a little bit from current HS students about college. I'm trying to find out whether it more or less means you're more successful, or doesn't matter. I'll post you guys when i'm done. Please. keep posting though. i need stats =] thanks.

It's okay. Post your reasons too, I'd like to gather all the information I can. If anybody is interested in the results of this subject, please notify me by posting or PM-ing =]. Thanks.
