Suspension and its impact for addmission to USD

I was suspended during my sophomore year of high school for substance abuse and I had to check that dreaded “Have you been suspended box.” Will this heavily impact my admissions into USD?

My GPA is 3.6, 1270 SATS, SATII: 660 Writing, 710 History, decent EC’s. What do you guys think my chances are with this suspension on my record?

Also, should I explain the suspension and tell what I learned from it in the 'Additional Comments" box? Or would this just draw more unwanted attention to the fact that I was suspended in the first place?

Thanks

Yes, explain and take responsibility for your actions. My friend had the same problem and was accepted to Yale. While it won't kill your application, you need to take responsibility.

To be honest, USD is not going to look favorably on this - they are BIG on character issues. Best bet is to explain in the additional comments box about what you have learned from the experience. And, it would help if your guidance counselor could attest to the fact that you haven't had similar problems since on the school report.
