Suspension

I'm actually posting this for my friend, who is extremely stressed out by his current situation but does not yet know the merits of College Confidential. I told him to create an account, but he refuses--something about hating internet forums, so here I am.

My friend will also be attending USC. He is a Presidential Scholarship winner.

He goes to a different school than me, and his prom was last weekend. He and a few friends used alcohol before Prom, and were discovered at some point in the night. I believe he has received a 1 day suspension.

He has one other suspension in the past, for tobacco use on campus (or maybe alcohol? I'm not sure, but again it was a relatively minor thing--definitely not cheating or drugs or violence or anything of the sort). This was a couple years ago, though, so I think USC already knows.

Basically, my advice to him has been to not report this to USC. His principle told him that they would not go out of the way to inform his colleges, as they see this a somewhat minor offense. He says that his school does not put suspensions on the final transcript that will be sent to USC.

I know that this is somewhat morally unsound, but it was my best advice to him, that in order for him to keep his Presidential status and more importantly, his admission, he should just keep it quiet, since USC essentially has no way of finding out.

Opinions? I know this is an extremely delicate situation and I would love to pass along as much advice as possible.

If he is required to fill out any paperwork that asks if he received any suspensions, he should answer truthfully. I am not aware of any such paperwork, so it should not be an issue.

In the meantime, he should be double-sure that senioritis does not set in and that he gets excellent grades for his final semester and graduates.

*If the school reverses its policy and decideas to include the suspension on the transcript, then he should be sure to inform USC with a complete explanation before they get that information from the school.
