Suspension

Hi I got suspended beginning of sophomore year for cursing out a teacher I have a 1080 SAT and a 3.0 GPA should I start at county college or will colleges still consider me

My daughter’s school doesn’t report disciplinary actions to colleges. Your school may not either. Hopefully you’ve learned from the mistake.

Well some schools I’m looking into make you write about it

Colleges will consider you. You wouldn’t be the first person to use improper language in discussions with teachers. It’s easily explained.

LOL, @ClassicRockerDad , there’s a big difference between using bad language to a teacher and cursing him out, as the OP said s/he did. I’d be worried about an anger management issue or possible potential for violence. The OP should address this concern to highlight his newfound self-control.

First the OP should talk to his/her guidance counselor to understand exactly what, if anything, will show up on the records sent to college. Then, if necessary he/she should address the issue directly.

Op said s/he was suspended. The application will specifically ask about suspensions… On the SSR, they will ask specifically about suspensions.

Both the counselor and the student are both expected to answer truthfully.

IMO, the GC has more to lose if not truthful because every other SSR/letter to that school(s) becomes circumspect.

At my school a disciplinary report is rn for every student at the end of junior year so they exactly what is on file.

OP will probably be able to start at a community college and transfer after two years.

So if my school doesn’t permit the release of these records i should be fine right?

No one woul be releasing your records. They would be truthfully answering the question if you have been suspended

A lot also depends on the college. There’s a world of schools between CC and the Ivy league. Many perfectly average directional state system schools are looking for thousands of normal 2.75 GPA students vs hundreds of perfect 4.0 students, and there are not nearly as many questions asked. Your GC has dealt with a bunch of kids and a bunch of schools and can help you identify schools where your skills can succeed and your record won’t slow you down.

What state do you live in?
Are you going to retake that SAT?
What classes are you taking senior year?
What’s your parents’ budget (do you need financial aid?)
What do you want to study

4-year colleges may consider you but the answers to all questions above will matter as well as whether you’re truthful about the 10th grade suspension.

So my school dosent report either so I don’t have to say anything?

You have to answer all questions honestly. It’s better they hear it from you than from somewhere else.

Talk to your GC.

FIRST, you must answer the question truthfully. You will be able to give an explanation. I would suggest a succinct, factual report and show remorse or a lesson learned. Options for colleges: to accept your explanation, request the disciplinary record from your HS or deny admission.
SECOND, the school WILL report it unless it has a specific policy not to disclose.
THIRD, the guidance counselor also has an option to mark “with reservation” on the GC form. They may not say anything more, but it is a HUGE red flag to colleges if you report “no discipline”

You have been given very thoughtful answers and you still question whether or not you have to self report. This should really be the end of this discussion.

No!

Here are the common app questions re: disciplinary history (and other apps have similar questions). Even if your school does not report disciplinary history on transcripts (I live in a state that forbids this practice), applicants still have to answer these questions truthfully:
