I would like to offer my condolences. Thank you very much for posting on this thread and sharing this information with parents.

Also sending condolences on the loss your son, along with my thanks for
the great strength you demonstrate in caring for the welfare of all our sons and daughters. The link to the EPA is http://www.epa.gov/enviro/wme/

My heart goes out to you, Linda. Thank you so much for raising people's awareness. Good luck.

Linda,
I am so VERY sorry about the loss of your son, and can't imagine the pain and heartbreak you felt as other Susquehana students suffered the ravages of cancer. Just so tragic.

I thank you for posting on the CC and insisting that further investigation was needed around Selingsgrove. You have done a GREAT service for other students, parents, and Selingsgrove residents.

As I write, the air and water are being monitored by the Department of health- all because of your efforts. THANK YOU!!
If all is found to be fine, you can rest knowing that, at least, the necessary studies were completed- and, if not then you will know that future students and residents will be protected.

Thank you again, Linda Kadel.

Linda,

Just another note of sincerest condolances, and deep thanks for your strength, determination, and dedicated service to others.

Thank you for your kind words, appreciated more than I can express.

Thank you for supplying the EPA link- interesting, isn't it? I realize that colleges are not responsible for toxic areas/ superfund sites, etc. But having said that, usually, colleges are the largest entities in the towns in which they are located. I think they have a responsibility to investigate the areas that might be of concern.

Sincerely, LK

Linda,

I'd also like to express my sincerest condolences. Thank you for bringing this information to light. My daughter is strongly considering SU and your information is helping greatly with our due diligence review. The EPA web page has allowed us to evaluate each of her potential college campuses for proximity to local sites that have environmental concerns. I feel a bit better after looking up Selinsgrove, PA and finding no listed superfund sites in the immediate area. Additionally, since there are mostly small quantity and conditionally exempt small quantity generators of hazardous waste in the area, I'm much more at ease.

Thanks again.

My deepest condolences too, Linda, and thank you for raising awareness on this important issue.

lspf32 I remember that sulfur smell from the BSteel plant. It was pretty strong some days. Never gave it much thought, now I wonder what the heck were we breathing those years?

I did live up on the hill the last 3 years, but still...

My condolences, too, Linda, and I deeply appreciate your willingness to speak out amidst your grief.

Another great site for finding out a ton of information about the environmental situation in your community is www.scorecard.org.

I teach an envirnomental justice section as part of a required course at the college I'm at, and when I project this on the screen in front of 100+ students, and start plugging in their zip codes, I watch their jaws drop. They see their world a little differently, but then they want to know what they can do to make it safer.

Thank you again for doing so much.

Thank you- I'm headed to that site now.

Linda

Garland,
WOW........interesting site.

2331clk--
I think it must have depended a bit on which way the wind was blowing. It could be awful sometimes down near the old stadium and lower centennial dorms, but barely noticeable a bit further up. I don't envy the people who lived with it all the time, though hopefuflly it's been long gone by now--

good reports so far- for those of you following this check out Patriot News at http://www.pennlive.com/news/patriotnews/index.ssf?/base/news/1174012807208710.xml&coll=1

update:
First result: Air tests clean
Friday, March 16, 2007
BY GARRY LENTON
Of The Patriot-News

No dangerous contamination was found in air samples taken near an old warehouse in Selinsgrove that now houses Susquehanna University students who live off-campus, the state Department of Environmental Protection announced yesterday.

The results are the first from a series of tests being conducted by the agency in response to a report in The Sunday Patriot-News that documented 21 people who attended the university between 1990 and 2001 who were diagnosed with cancer by age 30.

"We're not trying to say it's a clean bill of health, but we are letting people know that what we've tested so far has not given us any cause for concern," said Tom Rathbun, a DEP spokesman.

SJCM: Thanks for the update. My D was accepted just before this story came to light, and I'm glad we have a knee-jerk reaction and eliminate Susquehanna right away (we're still waiting to hear from FA).

SpringfieldMom,

I'm hoping you meant to say "I'm glad we" [didn't] "have a knee-jerk reaction and eliminate Susquehanna right away."

If so, my wife and I feel the same way. I'm an Environmental Compliance professional and see the knee-jerk reactions to this type of information regularly. Similar to your D, our D was accepted to SU recently. Although she expects acceptance to some more highly regarded schools, she's very much interested in SU (to the point where I believe she'll attend there). We've followed this isssue very closely and we're feeling better about the situation every day. In a couple weeks I'm hoping that we'll have concrete results so that when we attend the honors and accepted student open house days we can have our thoughts on the school, not the environmental concerns.

G

Greyhound your confidence as a professional and parent, in SU, is most encouraging to ALL the students and parents following this issue.

Greyhound: Thanks for the information. My D was accepted and considering SU, we are following this story. We know someone wo attended in the timeframe mentioned and is fine. We also have a relative who attened prior. As for Bethlehem Steel, I grew up there and am fine. My D loved the school but is not her first choice. Although everyone we know who attended loved it there.

rglick,

You're welcome. Our family will be attending the accepted honors, and accepted student days this upcoming Friday and Saturday. Recently, I've come to know some current students and parents of alumni who all can't say enough good things about this school. We've been to some real good schools (Vassar, Bucknell, Holy Cross, Boston College, etc.) and not only were the schools grounds absolutely beautiful at SU, we found the academic programs and people were great also. This school was an absolute surprise to us. After 14 college tours, we were kinda going through the motions making the trip there. As we toured the campus, I could tell my wife was thinking the same as me, that this is a truly a nice college that offers so much. However, we limited our outward emotions so that my daughter could come to her own conclusion. So you could probably guess the look on my wife and my face when we were walking off the campus and my daughter says "this is the school for me." It really threw a monkey wrench in my daughters selection process because prior to visiting there, we had written it off after all of the schools we had already visited. We knew nothing about Susquehanna U before our visit there last year and I can't tell you how delighted we all were as we toured the campus. SU was the last in a long list of colleges that we visited.

In my opinion, some early contributors to this thread were too quick to comment and base their decisions on conjecture, not facts. You can read all of the latest information either via the Susquehanna U web page ( http://info.susqu.edu/ ), or by going directly to the PA DEP web page (http://www.depweb.state.pa.us/ncregion/cwp/view.asp?a=3&Q=519676).
I encourage parents and everyone who has been accepted to Susquehanna U to read this information make an educated decision about attending based on the facts.
