I never go to Philly on weekdays, only weekends, and it runs every hour. It’s convenient to have a car. Swarthmore does have the Philly shuttle, but you don’t have much of a choice when it comes–I think it stops every 2 hours. I only go to Philly during the day so I don’t really know too much about transportation on weekend nights.

The other late night weekend option is to go from downtown to the 69th street Terminal, where you can pick up the 109 bus that runs right through Swarthmore’s campus and stops at the Swarthmore station. This bus runs 24/7. There’s a train from downtown to 69th street leaving as late as 12:30 and a bus route that leaves downtown as late as 2:30.

For going out to dinner, many Swatties head over to Media – 3 stops west of Swarthmore. There’s an old historic downtown that has become a bit of a regional restaurant hub, with a couple dozen restaurants from a brew pub to good Indian to Thai, and so on and so forth. I think Swarthmore’s started running the movie shuttle van over to Media, too. It’s only a couple miles.

I can vouch for the Media restaurants as well. Lots of good choices! 69th street is not my favorite place to be late at night - would only recommend in a group.
