Swarthmore Discovery Weekend 2005, R U going?

Out of curiosity, is anyone arriving earlier than 9am on Saturday?
If so, speak up and identify yourself...

Thanks nngmm. They sent me an e-mail today saying that the information for the weekend is in the mail already so i assume all the needed info, including what to pack will be in there.

some quick links to check out in the near future:

So far, Oct 21 (Fri) looks good.

I got mail today about all the little details and the itinerary. I'll be looking forward to seeing you guys there, feel free to IM if you want to just discuss stuff.

p.s. Pennsylvania weather is quite unpredictable and with the amount of rain hitting NY and NE, I'd advice rain gear :-)

I'm getting in on a flight from Detroit around 11:50.

Hey Jenny, I sent you an e-mail.
Anyone else going IM me at Phatalbert1321, it would be cool to get to know some people before showing up there.

How does the rooming thing work? im me at jarmy123

Read the letter they sent you carefully, it tells you that your host will be announced when you get there. So just be patient man, I think we're all pretty excited about a free trip to a top LAC.

Also, does anyone know what the food is gonna be like at the cafeterias and around town?

There is one big eating place where about 70-80% of the student population goes, that is Sharples. Then there are smaller places e.g Tarbles. My son does not like the food that much at either but he has always been a picky eater...and probably a little spoiled by us at home.

Ah...around town, next to the SpringField Mall, there is a row of good eateries....Italian, Thai, Chinese. I liked the Thai one. The Italian is semi-good but the salad was sorta stale...which ruined the effect, I like my salad crisp and fresh (who doesn't?). There are fine eating places at Media but you need a car. Of course, fine eating places at Philly....we recently visited a Cuban restaurant that I just loved.

SpringField Mall... hmmm... Are we allowed to leave campus? like eating off campus, and going shopping (King of Prussia Mall), etc.
Does anyone know if we don't attend some of the activities, can we go into the city? For ex. no Sunday night activity is particularly appealing, so would we be able to do something in the city?
I really want to visit South Street. According to onebigcampus.com, it's where all the college students hang out on weekends and evenings.

meetasi: "Also, does anyone know what the food is gonna be like at the cafeterias and around town?"

a philly cheesesteak is a must!

Yeah, I'm thinking of goign off campus to get some food, and skip many of the activities and just explore. I'm sure we could go off campus on Sunday night and take a train to philly.

philly cheesesteak O_O, I'm up for going into phily for a bit on sunday

Yes! I'm up for some "exploring"
I seriously wouldn't mind a nite in the (safe parts of the)city til like 2-3am... now maybe I'm pushing it.

Anyway, everyone should have a map of Philadephia (duh!) and the railway (<a href="http://www.septa.com%5B/url%5D">www.septa.com</a>)
FYI, one way from Swarthmore to University/Center City is $3.75-4.50.
There are Daypasses available <a href="http://www.septa.org/fares/daypass.html%5B/url%5D">www.septa.org/fares/daypass.html</a> =unlimited bus/trolley & one Railway per day

Haha. This weekend is sounding better and better

^ It's only as fun as you make it. (unless it rains, which is forcasted at the moment, booo)

Countdown: 3 more days! -woohoo, I'm SOO excited!unless it rains :(

Ahhahahaha, rain. I'm coming from central Florida, we're bracing for a hurricane, don't tell me about any rain, it will definitely be better than having to go through the weekend with Wilma. Also, to rub it in everyone else's face, I don't have school for 5 days, so my weekend is just that much better. Ah, the great teacher workdays of the world. :)

Well, I guess in your case, a lot of things would be better than a hurricane. But in CA, rain is the only thing that constitues bad weather (unless you don't like overcast, lame huh?)
I have the normal 2-day weekend... but I'm not planning on bringing any hw, that would ruin the trip, but maybe SAT stuff tho

If you're planning on going off campus, bring $40 for transportation, a taxi = $20+ and you never know if/when you'll need one...
and of course spending money for those philly cheesesteaks ;)
