About Discovery Weekend

Have most people heard back about whether or not they were accepted to the Discovery Weekend? I sent my app off on the 19th so it was before the deadline. Hm, they said they would send decisions on or before the 28th right?

Thanks for any input.

Nope, I haven't heard back yet either. I sent my app in early too and I felt I wrote a strong "essay." Hopefully we'll hear from them soon...even though the 28th is tomorrow.

Man, I hear that for the liberal arts colleges they really increase your odds of acceptence. I hope they just glance through the transcript and focus on the standardized scores and the awards thing. Man, I really hope I was accepted because I think I might do Swarthmore ED, but I would like to see it first, you know?

Yeah, I hear you. I think at Amherst they say they accept 70% of those who get accepted into the open house weekends so it must be roughly the same for Swarthmore. I haven't gotten an official letter in the mail or anything, but Suzi Nam emailed me today saying I was accepted. So check your email if you haven't already! :) G'luck!

Oh, and just by looking at your old "Chances at Harvard EA" thread, it seems more than likely you'll be accepted! :)

Were all admitted students emailed? I hope she just hasn't got to my name yet.

I got in! I'm so excited...i was emailed my acceptance letter, but that's all so far. It reads:

Subject: Discovery Weekend at Swarthmore College

September 28, 2005

Dear ,

I am delighted to invite you to Swarthmore’s Discovery Weekend!

Your application to Discovery Weekend, including your academic performance in high school and your interest in Swarthmore, made you stand out among an impressive group of students.

Swarthmore’s Discovery Weekend will afford you the opportunity to discover many aspects of the College – academics, student life, extracurricular activities, and social life – through panels, informal discussions, and social activities with Swarthmore students, faculty and administrators.

BLAH BLAH BLAH (a bunch of details)

I and the rest of the Swarthmore admissions staff wish to welcome you to Swarthmore’s Discovery Weekend. We all look forward to meeting you!

Sincerely,

                                                                Suzi Nam
                                                                Associate Dean of Admissions
                                                                Director of Multicultural Recruitment

P.S. Your official Discovery Weekend acceptance letter is in the mail.

Man so does that mean if I didn't receive an email, I probably wasn't accepted? What a total bummer. I was definitely planning on a Swat ED, but now... =(

Don't give up, definitely wait a few more days...if you haven't received a rejection letter yet, you haven't been rejected...

tid, didn't u say 3 days ago that you were applying ED to Amherst & EA to Chicago?

According to TID, he was accepted to Julliard, Penn, and Caltech last year as a junior. He accepted Penn's offer with deferred enrollment for a year.

I'm guessing that, somewhere in the Discovery Weekend application process, Swarthmore would probably learn that a student has already accepted a spot at another college.

No, no. You guys didn't fully understand. I don't think I said Amherst was my for sure ED. I think Swarthmore and Amherst are my top two decision schools but I was hoping that Discovery Weekend would allow me to fully decide whether or not Swarthmore was #1. I am still doing EA to Chicago. And yes, I was accepted to all those schools last year. I did commit to Penn, but I am not bound to go there. I deferred admission at the University. Schools I am applying to this year are notified about my application records, however, my top schools will be notified that if offered admission there, I will immediately matriculate, and pull out from Penn. This option is known to Penn as well.

You can always e-mail Suzy Nam to find out your Discovery Weekend status.

I think that you must surely understand why colleges may not want to pay to fly you around the country since you already have an enrollment slot in hand elsewhere. It's one thing to fly someone around with multiple acceptances when the school feels like they have a fair shot. But, to be looking for more acceptances to play off against Penn might not sit right.

At the very least, I think you will probably need to be prepared to explain why you have changed your mind about colleges since last year.

I think the school that you need to be most concerned about is Penn.

It was my impression that Chicago is your first choice school. Why would you apply ED elsewhere?

Also, it was my understanding that you are worried about your chances for admission because of GPA that plummeted during your junior year. The best way for you to prove yourself now is to get straight As (or close to it) during your first semester senior year. Colleges don't see first semester grades in the early applications round. I think the best strategy for you would be to raise your GPA, and then apply RD. In the worst case scenario you'll end up at Penn. It's not a bad outcome either.

Ok, ok. Yes, Chicago is my first choice school, but I'm one of those people who others hate and who just want to get into a school early. I like Chicago the best but also really enjoy Swarthmore and Amherst. Any of those schools would be awesome for me. Secondly, I don't really like Penn. But, I like it more than the other schools I was accepted into last year-which is why I chose it. It just doesn't fit me the way I thought it would. At the freshman weekend I felt a little not right. Third, Swarthmore didn't know that I was accepted to Penn last year. No school will have that information unless I provide it. Which I am going to address in supplementary essays to my top choice schools.

As of now, I'm just hoping I was admitted to discovery weekend, or at least am informed of my rejection if that may be the case =/ Thanks for your support everyone.

Can someone please fill me in on discovery weekends . Do all of the top lacs have them? When and how do you apply? Is it like a mini application with the admin people reviewing the candidates? Is it only for high school seniors? Do you send for application? Do the college web sites alert to deadlines? Thanks everybody!

Today, 03:30 PM :"Schools I am applying to this year are notified about my application records."

Today, 05:11 PM :"Swarthmore didn't know that I was accepted to Penn last year. No school will have that information unless I provide it."

" I like Chicago the best but also really enjoy Swarthmore and Amherst." - If so, why are you planning to apply to Berkley and UCLA???

Maybe you should get all your stories straight first. Then decide on your first choice school, and apply only to that one early.

Ah, dude this is not the point of the post. Yes, I will notify the schools that are my top choices about the fact that I was also admitted to Penn last year to let them know that I will reject Penn and accept their school without fail. Secondly, I am considering those other schools like Berkley and UCLA because there is no 100% chance of me being accepted to my top choice schools. Look dude, I'm really not a fan of UPenn. I used to be, but not after my campus visit.

Right now, Chicago, Amherst, Swarthmore are schools that really appeal to me. Attending any of them would truly make me happy. For this reason, I am applying Chicago Early and to one of the others ED. I don't want to be limited in my options thus applying in such a manner would heighten my chances of admission to one of those schools in the early round. Yes, I would like to be admitted early. And yes, if I were rejected ED and accepted to Chicago I would NOT apply elsewhere.

The root of this matter comes down to the fact that there are several schools now that I would enjoy more than Penn. Sorry for any confusion, and for the thread digression.

And thanks for the tip about strong senior year grades. I've aced my first six weeks period, and two teachers have already approached me to write my recommendations. Thanks again, nngmm.
