Swarthmore Discovery Weekend 2005, R U going?

No one looked closely enough when I stuck my middle finger in their faces, so I had to tell them that's what the eyes looked like.

candlize, who r u? Did you go into Philly Sunday evening w/ me and my group?

did all the spec's get fee waivers in the mail from suzi nam?
and how are you planning on using them, if we are applying online.

jennyz, yes I did go into Philly! My names is James. Did we meet each other?

Yep, I got a fee waiver. I think we sned it in with the swarthmore supplement. I'm sure that the admissiosn committee at swarthmore has thought about it and know what they're doing.

What if we're applying online? do we still just send it in to them seperately. i e-mailed someone there and am waiting for a reply, i'll send out the info when i get it

I think I'll have to call the admissions office because I did not know we were getting a fee waiver and went ahead and paid the $60 like a month ago. But I want my money back!

i have just been informed by suzi nam that we should just send in the waiver anyways and i guess they'll take care of it from there, Candlize i'd suggest you call them and ask about that to see what they can do.

OMG! I can't believe I completely missed out on this forum! When I was applying to Discovery Weekend, I found the forum for last year, and I talked about applying and getting accepted, but I had no idea that there was another forum. Anyways, to catch up...I'm from Louisiana...Alexanria, LA (it's in the very center of LA). No Katrina dammage, but a little Rita dammage. I came in LATE Saturday night...sorta early morning. The ACT dominates in LA, and I had to take it that morning, so my flight out of LA was at like 3 in the afternoon, and after the scarriest (and first!) taxi ride in my life, I arrived at the admissions office at like 12:30 AM. So, I really really enjoyed the weekend and I really think that Swat is my top choice now! I went to Penn with my roomate...I lost his e-mail!...to visit my sister who I hadn't seen in a couple of months. I roomed with a guy named Alex...it was great! He was so cool! I really had a good time, and that big chair in the middle of nowhere was really awesome! The temperature change from like the 70s-80s in LA to the 20s and 30s at 3:00 AM was a real change awakening. I don't usually like the cold, but Swarthmore deffinately made up for it. My favorite part was probably the student discusision panal part....learned so much there. Anyways, I hope to maybe see some of you guys there in September! BTW, do you guys know of anything wrong with Swarthmore? I've been searching forever and ever, and I even had to ask my interviewer who just told me that there was a lack of parking spaces. Also, I heard a rumor that our interviewers had to write like a 2 page report on each of us??? Oh well...got to get back to stupid HW...on a Saturday!

negatives of swat
"
1) As a result of small size, some social difficulties may be harder to avoid (like if you break up with gf/bf you'll still likely to see them all the time all over the place)
2) In order to have big variety of classes offered, many of the less "mainstream" classes are offered every other year, or even less often. So if there is a particular class you really want to take, you have to plan it carefully, as it might be offered only once or twice during your 4 years there.

Both of the things I mentioned have to do with Swarthmore's small size. You have to take into account that small size has many, many advantages that in my mind by far overweigh the disadvantages, especially for students who like interactive classes and close relationship with the faculty. You have to decide what your priorities are, and then choose the school that fits." (from nngmm) (there are some negatives listed in the "swarthmore vs haverford" forum if you want to check those out) good luck

WOW! Great information in the Haverford forum! Thanks for your help too! I agree, Swarthmore is sorta small, sizewise, but I'm pretty sure that they allow students to crossregister for classes at Penn if they want...I agree...the advantages make the disadvantages look like ants!

Yes, you can cross register at Haverford or Bryn Mawr, and take classes in the College of Arts & Sciences at Penn.

you might have to be female to cross register at bryn mawr...

Men take courses at Bryn Mawr.

Not many Swatties take courses at the other schools. Swarthmore offers a ton of courses and the offerings for the next three years or so are published by each department, so it's not that difficult to take the courses you want. For example, everyone knew that Tim Burke was teaching his "Images of Africa" course this semester and his "History of the Future" course next semester.

Most of the cross-registration is in fields where it is difficult to provide depth across the board -- for example, in foreign languages. The three schools also share some resources in some programs such as the new Middle Eastern Studies/Arabic offerings where I think each school is contributing a faculty position.

There's also some cross-registration where one school is exceptionally strong. For example, Swarthmore has a top linguistics program. Bryn Mawr has outstanding Anthropology, etc. So, there is some opportunity to take a wider range of electives.

Who's gonna apply?

Me: RD, not ED... committment scares me.

But anyway, with the fee waiver, there no reason for DW students not to apply, unless they didn't like thier experience of course.

On the shuttle to the airport, someone was saying how 95% of DW students get admited, is that really true?

hmm...i heard the rumor of like 70%...either way, it's a high percentage for a highly selective place like swat!

yay!!!!!
either way, that's pretty good, means I have a shot.

hmm. i'm applying RD too, though I believe i've now lost my fee waiver.
ahwell, hopefully it'll turn up.
