It almost seems tawdry to post "stats" in a Swarthmore thread, but I did it in others school forums (fora?), so I guess I might as well. I have to find some way to amuse myself now that my application is in. I mailed it on December 31st, and unfortunately I was rushing up until the last second, which resulted in at least one typo and a hasty "Why Swarthmore?" essay to boot. I hope it wasn't too bad, and I also hope the wait until April is bearable. Good luck, everyone!

Dear Lisa,

Swat definitely needs a lot of information from you before you are accepted. They hope to be able to give you the aid package at around the same time you get word of acceptance. Check out their on-line brochure at :
<a href="http://www.swarthmore.edu/Admin/financial_aid/aidpros.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.swarthmore.edu/Admin/financial_aid/aidpros.html</a></p>

They require a lot of information, but it will be to your advantage to send it all in!

Lisasimpson, yes, I think they require you to fill up the finaid form. Although I think Swarthmore does not require css profile but has their own financial aid form like css profile but more detailed. So you save the $20 and FAFSA is free anyway. But you have to go through the hassle and ask your parents to send their tax forms from this year. Yes, this year. This means they have to file income taxes early; by February would be an appropriate time. We didn't know that last year and had to rush by end of February. They want to make a finaid decision before they send out the decision letters, although Swat is more accomodating than other colleges.

Ah...swat does require css as well as their own form.

Achat, actually the college does require the Profile, and also that the tax information be compiled by the IDOC service provided by Profile. This latter thing is new this year, and I noted that Yale wants to use the IDOC service too. I am totally new at that part. Maybe I need to go buy some lottery tickets ;) Swarthmore does also ask that you complete the institutional form at the link above. A LOT of info.

Achat, we overlapped. Hope your son is well at Swat! Maybe still on vacation!

ok thanks achat and momofthree..the parents here are so helpful!!

Momofthree, thanks for asking. Yes, he's still on vacation. He had a great first semester (albeit pass-fail) and is really looking forward to his classes next semester. You know, all this talk of professors who are not that well-known in their fields at LACs - the intro poli sci course next semester will be with someone who is nationally known for his essays and dialogue.

Fantastic news, achat! I know in checking the Swarthmore in the News sites that the faculty does amazing work. I have one thought that came to me at I remembered the pass/fail first semester. My D did well that term, her actual grades were available online, but she never printed them out. When it came time to apply to grad school, the registrar said there was no way to retrieve them. You might suggest to your son that he keep a copy, just in case!
