So Bryn Mawr has a swim test. How hard is it to get out of it? I have severe water phobia. I’m know we can take a class, but what if I take it and I still can’t swim? Is there no way out of it?

I know it’s not what you want to hear, but maybe try to cowgirl up and learn to swim just a little. The purpose of the swim test is to keep you from drowning if you ever fall off of a boat, into a pool or off a dock.

If you panic you could drown… learn to swim and you won’t panic.

I imagine a doctor’s note could be used to excuse you if this is not a convincing argument.

No worries, swim classes get you out of the swim test, whether or not you can stay afloat afterwards. I would encourage you to give the class your best effort though. Passing the swim test is rewarded with an additional PE credit ;)

Awesome. Thanks.

I still remember how we all cheered each other on during the swim test – especially the treading part, if that’s still part of the current scope. Learning how to swim comes in handy for years to come – great exercise and perfect for beach trips.

Yeah, treading’s still part of the swim test. :)

Thanks, kfletcher! Five minutes, back in my day! Somebody once told me that Marines have to tread for that long without using their arms! Now that’s hard! It’s a very sensible requirement – no idea how may other schools require it.

5 minutes?! Oh wow. I’m glad it’s only one minute now.

Wow the only other schools I’ve heard of with a swim test are the military academies! :D

does anybody know what the swim test consists of?
