I have severe water phobia... if I take a class and I still can't swim, will they really not let me graduate? Have you heard of anyone getting an exception?

MIT won’t be unreasonable. If someone has severe water phobia, I doubt MIT would force them to take a swimming test. That’s just be cruel and unusual.

MIT has been known to be very strict about the swim test, but if you can get a doctor’s note explaining the situation and are willing to argue with them a lot, they’ll probably exempt you. You might consider actually getting in before worrying about it too much, though.

I thought you only had to show that you could tread water for a certain amount of time to fulfill the graduation requirement. I thought you only had to do the swim test if you want to sign up for rowing or sailing.

Maybe you can get your doctor to get you some pills for that day just for the swim test.

You got that backwards. The swim test is a graduation requirement - if you want to sail you have to tread water in addition to the swim test.

I believe you can take the beginner swim class to get out of the swim test as well.
