Swimmer/National Merit/Orchestra/Small college

No, but a friend of my daughter goes there and received a swimming scholarship. I’m thinking I had heard it was full tuition (and she LOVES it as well.)

Franklin & Marshall? Don’t know how good the swimming program is but they have a fabulous pool.

Your son may want to look at DePauw, Gustavus Adolphus, Kalamazoo College and Washington & Lee. All have quality swim teams and orchestras. We went through the search process last year with our swimmer.

*I haven’t done the FA calculations. Just figured we wouldn’t qualify after talking with some admissions people. I will do that. *

It’s a good idea to find out your federal and institutional expected family contributions because if it’s higher than $15k (which it sounds like it might be), then many schools won’t work because they will expect more than you’ll pay and a student loan won’t close the “EFC gap” when there is likely going to be a loan in the FA package already.

Once you know what your FAFSA EFC and your CSS Profile family contribution are likely going to be and you determine whether they are affordable or not, then you’ll need to prioritize the importance of all that you want…

For instance…would this be your priority?

My DD is a NMF at St. Olaf (first-year). She is also in the Manitou Singers choral group and on the swim team. She loves everything about St. Olaf! The orchestra/band members have a larger commitment than the singers in terms of time each week. One young woman I spoke to at Family Weekend says half the band is made up of non-music majors. They have practice 3x a week for 2 hours, are expected to take a private lesson each week and practice one hour per day. The swim team commitment is 1 hour of dryland MWF and 2 hours MTWThFS. The swim practice is either early afternoon or late afternoon, which works around the MWF chorus practices, but I don’t know how it fits with orchestra/band practices. DD says swimmers are awesome–the juniors and seniors high-five you after each set, etc., and she adores the coaches. St. Olaf has a merit aid cap of 50% cost of attendance (approx. $23k this current year). NMF get $7500/yr for 4 years, in addition to other scholarships that can total up to a max of 50% COA, so you would still have a gap to fill if you only want to spend $15k/yr. DD is also in Great Con, which is a really amazing experience, according to her and her new, dear friends. I hope this info helps–St. Olaf is a unique, remarkable place!!!

Consider Vassar - they have an extremely strong orchestra (music majors and non majors) and a really great group of kids on their Div 3 swim team. It is possible to do both but you will be very busy.

I heard that Hamilton’s orchestra has a great new conductor but I have not heard them perform yet. The swimming is very strong at Hamilton. Not sure if you can do both there.

I’m really impressed with all the info one can gather from this site. Thank you! I made a list of the colleges he hasn’t considered yet. It is really helpful to have the inside scoop on the colleges he is considering, too. I wish we could find more small LA schools in the 20-35K/yr range that have a swim program. I know about the ones that he considers too close–Drury, Truman. Any in other states?

Minn, Michigan, Ohio and Penn are chock full of DIII swim programs at top notch LACs. Your 20-35K range is doable at most with merit scholarships (some better than others). List price COA for most of these schools runs 40-52K. We investigated probably 25+ of these schools. Feel free to IM me if you want specific input on any of these.

Another plug for Grinnell. Very generous merit aid and they just opened a new natatorium -

If interested in Colgate, might look at sports rival Holy Cross(don’t have to be religious). Holy Cross recruits actively in Kansas for students and has Jayhawks on its football, basketball, and lacrosse rosters. HC has very nice campus-1 hour from Boston and is need blind for financial aid. Hc alums include 1 Supreme Court Justice, 1 Senator, 3-4 Congressmen, Chris Matthews. Colgate is a great school but remote. Davidson is about 1000 students smaller than Holy Cross or Colgate.

No merit aid at Hamilton College or Colgate University.

As part of the Patriot League Colgate did state there are a few athletic scholarships.
