Swimming at Dartmouth

Hi Everyone!

I was wondering if there are any current Dartmouth men's swimmers or recruited athletes for the class of 2011 who could answer some of my questions about the Dartmouth men's swimming program.

First of all, how strong is the program and how difficult is it to be recruited/join as a walk-on? I realize that it is probably late in the season to be recruited, but I recently contacted the coach to ask about the possibility as joining as a walk-on...if I am accepted. I compare well to some current Dartmouth swimmers (I looked at all meet results for the 2006-2006 season), however, I think I would still be at the bottom of the pack. Some of my in-season times are (all from regular season meets....states/seniors are in a few weeks):

50 y free - 23.13 (22.77 relay split)
100 y free - 53.36
100 y back - 1:01.25

Also, what is the team atmosphere like? Is it extremely competitive? How does Dartmouth compare to other teams?

I really would like to swim in college, but this is my first short-course season on a USS team. Any input is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Swimming is weak at Dartmouth. 2 years ago the school tried to can the swim teams to put the $$ behind stronger sports.

yeah. among the ivy leagues, swimming is the strongest at brown and princeton, from what i've heard.

Are you male or female?

male (10 char)

Wait, you're going to senior nats?

no CT seniors. its the fastest meet offered by the state of CT

i don't know about the guys swim team at dartmouth, but the girls got 7th at ivys last weekend. so i figure the guys team is around there. with those times, i doubt that you would have been recruited/put on the recruit list for admissions. but i would think/hope that the coach would allow to you swim, as long as you are willing to put in the practices and work hard. typically, ivy swim teams have a wide range of swimmers with varying ability. also, if you haven't been swimming for that long, you'll probably improve a lot if you continue to train in college

thank you for your input! yea I assumed that I wouldn't have been recruited, as I am still improving. but I have really come to enjoy swimming and I was hoping that I would have the chance to swim in college. I am accustomed to somewhat difficult training.. my team usually swims 7000 meters or around 7600 yards for our afternoon practices, then around 5000 meters for mornings. So it would probably still be a hard transition, but I hope that I could handle it.

I contacted the coach already, so I am waiting to hear back from him.

Are you on the women's team at Dartmouth?

Thank you so much!!

hey! I was just browsing through some other forums and I saw that you are applying with me for the class of 2011! Your times look great, and I really hope that everything worked out with your recruitment. You would definitely be a great asset to the team.

heyhey...thanks! hopefully everything works out for the both of us and we'll be swimming together next year! :-)

Yea, I'm hoping to walk on next year with a 2:21 200 breastroke (untapered, hoping to go at least 2:15 with taper and shave next weekend). I liked the fact that they go on cool recruiting trips to Hawaii and stuff. Of course I have to get in and then find a way to pay for Dartmouth....lol

I met with the swimming coach when I visited Dartmouth in the summer. He was really nice and the team seemed like a lot of fun. The men's team was ranked last in the Ivies last year, fyi.
