Swimming test~

GTs and swim test. I read somewhere online that GTs might be exempt from taking it. Is this true? Does that mean the student should take PE at their Freshman year college?

Thanks for any help!

does PE even count towards ur overall gpa? cause in HS it doesn't. if ti doesn't count in cornell who cares about the deduction? lol

PE classes are pass/fail.

Dr_Mom, I dunno, call the PE dept.

http://www.pe.cornell.edu/physed/

Also, it's just a little bit ridiculous and funny that this thread is 3 pages long

oh so .5 doesn't matter

I only know how to doggy paddle :(

lianri--Thanks for the advice and link. I've also heard a rumor from someone in another office on campus that Cornell may be abolishing the swim test requirement starting in Fall, '07. Not sure how reliable that information is, though, so contacting the PE Dept. is best.

I agree with others about the humor in this thread!

wow, I have no idea that my thread has turned out to be so entertaining.

i'm currently a freshman...i didnt take the swim test b/c i cant swim...and i havent taken PE swim...i am not penalized i simply wont graduate until i pass the swim test...

i really hope they abolish it -_-

The swim test is easy....25 meter pool, 1st lap on your stomach, 2nd on your back, 3rd your choice.

dog paddle is fine, as long as u dont drown. You dont need to have form or anything...plus if you start to drown, they'll fish you out...(people have had that happen to them) and you can instead take a gym class for it

i thought its a 50m pool o_O

I want them to keep it. I think this is the only way that I will be forced to learn to swim.

Does anyone know if you can hang on to the edge for a couple seconds at each end to change direction? I really don't float very well at all, and I think trying to turn around in the deep end will be an issue for me. Also, do we start in the deep end or in the shallow end? Because after I jump in I have to stand up before I begin swimming : P Either way, I think that right now I can only do about 15 meters without killing myself... I just need to build endurance this summer.

do you really get -0.5 from your GPA?

This is completely random and not really related to this board at all, but my sister went to Cornell (class of 2001) and I got to swim in the gorge when I was 9 or 10.... it was so COOL!!

im pretty positive you have to stay in the deep end because you can't jump in shallow water safely you'd hurt yourself.

i really can't swim either, but i passed the swim test fine. they really want you to pass it, so sometimes they even teach you how to swim as you're doing the swim test. one person didn't know how to swim on their back, so they taught them the backstroke right then and there. just don't worry about it. the only people who don't pass are the people who actually don't know how to swim. as in they've never been the water before. if that's you, it would be a good idea to take the class.
