****kk cant swim backwards

I quite agree with ivyconfidential

i dont understand why this is such a big deal. how have so many people made it through 18 years of life without ever having to/wanting to swim?

omg i cant get backstroke down, water keeps going up my nose...

I can understand, this is collegeconfidential.

Sorry, I haven't gone through all 8 pages of this thread... are incoming transfer students exempt from taking the swimming test?

^^As long as you will be entering with enough credits to be considered a sophomore or higher...transfers are exempt from the swim test and PE requirement.

Okay, so I have a few questions. I hope some of you who are already at Cornell or graduated from it are able to answer.
I want to learn how to swim and I'm a transfer with 30 credits so I'm exempt from taking the swim test, yet I still want to learn how to swim.
1) Is it really true (because I'm getting mixed signals) that if I do decide to take the swim classes, I would end up having to take the swim test?
2) Are Teagle and Helen Newman gender based or something for swimming? Like do they put females in one pool/gym and guys in the other for the swim classes? If not, is there a preference you may have for the better gym (I know that sounds retarded)?
3) Do they let ppl shower after the swim class at the gym or do you just have to wait til you go back to your dorm?

1) If you pass the swim test at any time, you can be exempted from the swim classes. Otherwise, you must take 2 semesters of swimming. If you can't pass then, they consider it their fault since they can't teach it.
2) Men are in Teagle, Women are in Helen Newman
3) I'd assume they let people shower at the swim class, since changerooms generally have showers. However, if you have a class immediately after, you may have to pass on a shower until later.

Can I only take ONE semester of swim?? I want to take horse back riding in the spring, and I feel like I'll be able to pass after a month of lessons

yeah I don't have to take the swim tests because I'm exempt, but I still want to take swim classes because I want to learn how to swim. So I'm asking that if I decide to take the swim classes, even though I don't need to take them, will I forfeit my swim test exemption?

Keep in mind, the beginning swim courses are geared towards getting people to pass the swim test. That means you will have to swim in the deep pool and you will have to do laps (just like on the swim test). Obviously, I'm sure they'll teach you basic swimming skills before just throwing you into the deep end. Since you are exempt, I'm not so sure you necessarily have to pass the swim test but you'll definitely be taking it.

Yea, it's only a one semester course.

I see everyone acting so worried about swimming the backstroke... I find that the easiest part of the test. Since they don't mark you on style, you don't have to do the full arm rotation stroke, you can just sort of push the water and get across.

At my university in the 1970s all incoming male freshman students had to take a mandatory nude swimming test. You had to tread water for 10 minutes in the nude. If you failed the test (or did not report to take the test), you were required to take a full-semester course in beginning swimming. You were allowed to wear swim trunks in the class, but it had to be their trunks which would only be issued to you after you presented yourself stark naked after taking a nude shower. After the class you would repeat the process, handing in your wet trunks at the booth (totally nude) in return for your towel and locker key. By the way, I refused to go take the test because as an 18-year-old guy, I was extremely self-conscious about my naked body.

what was the point of having everyone test nude?

And what university was that...?

cornell's test used to be in the nude too, not really sure why

but yeah the test is super easy, if you can swim at all you'll pass, you just have to make it across you don't even need to swim a proper stroke

yeah i just noticed this thread and it's kinda funny. but will i be fine if i'm a great swimmer, but just don't know all the technical forms and stuff with different strokes?

you don't need to know anything technical-- that would be a bit unreasonable.
when I took it this year, you had to go down the pool on your front, back on your back, and then down again however you could.

I found the test quite exhausting, and I was in good shape too. swimming is not my strength.

have to bring anything to the swim test?
and I’m guessing they have changerooms right so I should bring an extra set of clothes
