Switch majors or double major?

Hi,

I am currently a senior environmental science major, with a minor in math. Originally my freshman year, I was a math major. I switched from the math major because I failed very important math class Foundations of Mathematics, but then just last year, I aced the class after deciding to pursue a math minor. I'm currently taking 2 math classes right now, and I am thoroughly enjoying them. So much so that i am thinking of double majoring or switching majors in the middle of senior year. If I were to double major, i would need to stay for one more semester (1 summer class, and 4 fall classes). and if i were to switch back, i would only need 2 more classes in 2011 fall. If i were to switch back to math, i would have to take Advanced Calculus (the most difficult undergrad math class by a long shot) and Modern Algebra (quite difficult too). I know I can pass Modern Algebra, but I'm not sure about Advanced Calc. I'm not sure what to do. I'm pretty sure math majors are paid more than environmental science majors too.

Are you sure about math majors getting paid more than environmental science majors? As far as I know math BS’s aren’t getting people very far right now.

Math can get you a programming job, a finance job (if you are sufficiently qualifed), and into graduate school in Math, Physics, Economics, Computer Science or Industrial Engineering. The math major can also prepare students for medical school or law school or careers as actuaries, statistical analysts, and high school teaching.

Math has a great number of options, more than most other majors I’d say. It’s just that especially at a good math program, it can be very hard. By the way, I am not a math major but an engineering major.

I have no clue what jobs environmental science majors can get but I have doubts that they have nearly as many options as well qualified mathematics majors.

I have a B in epidemiology and an A in numerical analysis this term. Last term I had a B in Stat Methods and C in Foundations of Mathematics; I also carried 20 credits that term so my grades would have been better if I had the normal 17. my freshmen year was the last time I’ve taken any math classes. I AP’d out of Calc 1 and 2. I got a B in Calc 3, and a C in Diff Equation. I had a pretty big meltdown in the middle of freshman year, and it took me up to the summer to get myself straightened out. oh yeah, I have an F in Foundations from then dragging down my math GPA -_-

I’m not so certain my math gpa is good enough to get me into a grad school or a good job. If I ever do take advanced calc and linear algebra, I know it will be a massive struggle to get anything above a C. I have a 3.2 in env sci now so I guess it would be foolish of me to drop that now. but I really, I feel torn inside. The semesters I did not take any math felt so barren to me. I did have 2 semesters of physics to console me, but that felt like algebra (aside from EnM !)
