Switching classes

Posted this in the USNA forum too.

I'm currently a senior in high school right now taking on a full IB course load. Right now, I am taking IB Physics I (equiv to Physics Honors). However, I'm seriously considering switching out, and taking IB Biology II Higher Level (I took IB Bio I= AP bio last year) instead. I received an LOA from USMA last week. Will the admissions office view this change of course in a negative way? can they rescind my LOA because of this?

also, IB Physics IS NOT a weighted class...there is no exam. IB Biology II HL IS a weighted class...will take exam at end of the year.

thanks and sorry for the confusion.

You're talking about switching from one IB to another IB? Don't stress over little details like this. Take what you think will help you the most in college.

Just make sure you notify admissions. It probably won't have an affect on your LOA - but it was awarded based on the transcripts that you submitted.

Q - Why the change? Have you taken any Physics at all? If not then I advise you to take it. You WILL take Physics at West Point.

As JAM says, Physics is required while you're at West Point. The IB foundation will be very good for you. Biology is not required at all. That said, you may want to consider contacting Admissions for their take on it.

Good luck and congratulations on receiving an LOA!!

As a usafa physics major, I'd recommend you stick with the physics. All biases aside, taking physics will help you with what most view as a very challenging "haze" that is part of the core. Exposure to it, even if it isn't calculus based, will give you an idea of what's going on when you take it at west point, even though I'd expect that it'd be calc based there. At least you'll know the fundamental ideas and principles behind everything, so you don't get so bogged down with trying to learn fundamentals and also derive equations, etc, and all the other stuff that people think makes physics hard.

Take physics, you will definitely need it.
