Switching from AP Calc BC to AP Stats

Hi everyone, my senior is in a bit of a dilemma right now…her high school just switched from semester system to quarter system this year and as you can imagine the AP classes move very fast. She took AP Cal AB in the first term (finals coming up this week) so basically, as you probably know, they covered a year’s worth of material in a semester. She is thinking of switching from AP Calc BC to AP Stats for the second term (semester). Of course all her applications have already been submitted with AP Calc BC listed as a “planned” course. Will this switch jeopardize her chances or get her offers rescinded or is she fairly safe being that she is switching from one AP to another, and with the quarter system this second term is basically an extra “year” of classes anyway. She has a fairly good GPA of 3.97 (unweighted) 4.1 (weighted) and an ok SAT score of 1370 (700 math). And…if she does switch, does she have to advise the colleges of this change? We would appreciate any input on this matter. Thank you.

Where did she apply?

She applied to UCLA, UCB, UCSB, UCD, UCI, USC, UW, WWU, CU Boulder, Rensselaer, a couple of Cal States, has been accepted to U of SC (Columbia), ASU, Mines and WWU

Check the colleges on the rules about changes to planned schedule. Often, there is a requirement to inform them of any changes. For example:

Also, calculus AB + BC content is typically covered in one academic year in college.

For UC’s:
Freshmen: If you change schools, add or drop a course, or fail to earn a C or better in a course after you submit your application, you must notify the UC Application Center by email or postal mail. Your correspondence must include your name, UC Application ID number and your signature (if you mail a letter), and will be available to all the campuses to which you applied.

If you receive an offer of admission, be sure to confirm with the campus admission office that they are aware of the deficient grade or schedule changes. Although you must notify the campus of these changes, we cannot guarantee that a campus can go back to review an application after correspondence has been received. Make sure to save a copy of your correspondence just in case.

Postal mail:

For Cal states: Call and email class schedule changes to each school. Make sure you document whom you to talk to in admissions.

@Gumbymom and @ucbalumnus Thank you for the info. We will do that as soon as she decides (by tomorrow) what to do

@ucbalumnus thank you for the extra info. She is not a natural for math and has to work extremely hard for the ‘A’ and she does very well with that. Any extra credit heading into college is a great help as long as she can get a good score on her AP exams

@Gumbymom @ucbalumnus and anyone else…I now have the info for UC’s and CSU’s. What about other schools such as U of Washington, U of South Carolina, Boulder etc? Should we ask them directly?

If you cannot find information on the web site of the school, try asking directly.

@ucbalumnus will do, thanks
