Hi, I was accepted to Northeastern as a Health Science major. I've looked into this major more and realized that I would be better suited for the behavioral neuroscience major. This was originally what I wanted to do but let myself get talked out of it. I know that it's possible to switch into the major after the first year, but I was wondering if it's possible to switch before I get there so I don't have to go through that. If anyone has had any experience with this please let me know. I'm visiting the school soon and would like advice on the best way to go about this.
Thanks!

It is definitely possible to switch before you start (and as a behavioral neuroscience major myself, welcome!). One of my friends switched from bio to bns before starting. That was a little easier because it was within the college of science. However, BNS is not wicked competitive like getting into pharmacy, business, PT, or some others. I would contact admissions right away, though. I’m not sure who ultimately deals with that change, but I think admissions is the best place to start.

I’ve already switched my major. What you need to do is log into your myneu account and then go to the self service tab. On that page there is a link to submit a request to change your major. Once you submit it, someone will need to approve it. I got a response the next day, but at the admitted students reception was told it could take up to a week for them to process it & respond.

Thanks for the replies I requested to switch majors on myneu last night. percheno did they email you that it had been approved? Nonotechnology, how do you like the program? What kind of co ops are the most popular?

I just got the email, its been approved!

Hey i have the same problem i want to change majors but mantain the same conditions given to me ( honors program and scholarship). What do you think? Will that be possible?
One more question the desicion will be post on your NU portal or they will send you a email?

I definitely like BNS. One of the reasons it appealed to me is because I was interested in neuroscience from having taken psych classes in high school, and the Northeastern program incorporates both bio and psych classes. Since starting, I’ve gone more in the bio/CS direction rather than psych, but I was glad to have the options.
As for co-ops, BNS students generally look at ones open to bio and psych majors. For bio, there are a lot of research co-ops, in hospitals, academia, and industry. I’m not as sure for psych, but there is research and stuff like working with children with autism, etc. It’s hard to get something clinical that involves actually working with patients unless you have some sort of certification like EMT or CNA.

When submitting the change of major form on the portal does it give any kind of confirmation? Or after pressing the submit button does it go to a “successful” type page? After I pressed submit several times nothing happened, closed my browser and resubmitted my request and nothing happened again. Is this normal?

Hi, I was wondering is it harder to change majors from another school? I’m planning to change my major from International Affairs to International Business. Do you think they’ll get mad or something?

@ericop8 - You might want to contact them to make sure it went through.

@ibinh - It might be harder across colleges. I’m not sure what you mean by anyone getting mad. The worst case, I think, is that you apply for a change of majors and it gets turned down. If that’s the case, you will still likely be able to transfer after you start if you meet certain requirements in terms of classes completed and grades. Check the course major descriptions in the course catalog on the registrar’s website.

Thanks @nanotechnology. I meet the GPA requirements but I’m still waiting for their response. Fingers crossed!
