I'm currently an undergrad materials science major with a minor in electronic materials. I'm applying to schools for Ph.D. programs for Fall 2012, and just received my first acceptance letter today (hooray). Most of the schools that I applied to were for materials science Ph.D. programs, but one of them is actually solid state electrical engineering.

So just curious- has anyone switched majors for graduate school (or is planning to)? How did it work out? I really like the electrical engineering university, but I'm worried about whether I'd be able to handle the new coursework and possibly the qualifying exam.

Well – not completely switching fields, though I’ve done that in the past, but going back to school after 10+ years home with kids. It’s not easy, but at times it’s exhilirating.

I switched fields, twice. It’s surprisingly not that big of a deal and my changes were much more drastic than yours. Most programs have a good based of MS level courses that you take to get up to speed in the field before really getting deep into the PhD program (though that won’t be a problem for you because it’s really such a small change).
