Switching majors from Anthropology to Engineering

Hi,
I’m a freshman and I go to a top college (don’t want to say which one for confidentiality reasons), and I want to switch my major from Anthropology to Mechanical Engineering. I was never the best in my class at math, although it’s worth noting that I really never tried to be good at it. I like math though, it’s fun, and I definitely like physics. But I don’t feel like I have the strongest foundation in math by any means. I’m willing to put the work in to be good at it though, and I’ve taken as high as calculus and physics… those with experience in engineering majors (preferably mechanical), is it possible to make it through an undergrad track in ME with a not so great foundation of math, as long as you’re willing to put the work and time in? I really appreciate any feedback. Thanks

Yes, it’s possible. I switched from business to science, and had to take the engineering math and physics sequence. In HS, I only took 3 years of math and so I did not have the prereq to take Calc I in college. But somehow I convinced a math advisor I could do it, and he put me in Calc 1 even though I never had pre-calc and had not taken any math in 2 years. The first semester was tough, but by Calc 2, I was caught up to everyone else. I never liked math or thought I was good at it. What a pleasant surprise I had to learn that I did like it and was pretty good at it as long as I put in the effort. I ended up taking extra math after finishing differential equations. Sounds like you’re willing to do the work! Good luck!

That’s great to hear, glad you made the switch and were able to do it/enjoyed it!

Never regretted the change. My GPA took a hit, but it was worth it!
