Since I’m not entirely decided on life in general, one of the main things I’m looking for in a college is the ability to chance majors. Is it possible to change majors at Umich? I think I’d be switching within CoE (I was admitted for bioengineering) to CompSci or something, but I won’t be decided for a while.
It’s definitely possible, not difficult, and relatively common. Most people don’t know what they want to do when they enter college.
Assuming you were admitted as a freshman, you were actually admitted to CoE and not a specific major (although you may have expressed your intent for bioengineering). So the good news is that you have time to figure out what you want to major in.
And it is not uncommon for someone to change major after sophomore year.
Okay thank you! I was looking at a lot of the course plans for colleges, and for engineering, the plans are like crammed with little wiggle room and it scared me to be restricted like that XD Thanks guys!
@mistnight8 at Michigan, the first-year engineering curriculum is full of prerequisites that are needed across all/most disciplines like Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, and intros to Engineering and CS, so you won’t be behind at all really. Those courses will most likely apply to every degree in the CoE.
Even if you get AP credits for them, phys, calc1&2, your first year engineering classes would still be common core and mostly not major specific.
It’s very easy to do so if you are in LSA. With engineering, you could be delaying graduation if you don’t make up your mind sophomore year. However, taking a fifth year does not reflect negatively on you, provided that you are not frequently dropping classes or only taking the minimum load.
