Switching majors?

Hi, i want to know if UCI and UCSD allows you to change majors once you get in. My grades aren't top notch (like a 3.5gpa (i know this for sure) weighted 3.3 unweighted (i think)) With these grades i don't think i can even get into SD but i gotta take my act to see what i'll get. I'm even worried i'll get rejected from irvine but i have a lot of extra curriculars and volunteering. I'm going to major in computer engineering (don't know which part yet) but i heard it's very hard to get into those schools with an engineering major so i was thinking of going in as something that's less competitive and then switching. Do you guys know if they let you switch majors?
Is it always guaranteed or is it a slim chance for me to switch?
Thanks.

just be straight up

if you go in undeclared you'll struggle in the major you want.

By that do you mean i won't be able switch to that major?
Or that i'll get into the major but fail?

People who are undeclared have a harder time getting classes that they want for their major, because some classes might be restricted to certain majors. It is much easier applying as the major you want because if you get in then you are basically guaranteed those restricted classes.

by that i mean if they don't let you in the first time, you're probably unqualified to switch into the major and will struggle for 4 years in it even if you do get in.

Do you know if they look for certain grades?
I've been interested in computers my whole life and know much more than most people but i'm horrible at math which means i get Cs but the classes were mostly AP. Will this destroy my chances of getting in as a computer engineer?

computer science is ALL about math

yes it will hurt your chances.

but if you explain your passion in your essay that'll help you a bit.

i thought high school was hard, but it’s nothing compared to college. just sayin. i’m a freshman at ucsd now. study hard. and for your question, yes, you can change your majors anytime.
