So I recently just submitted the fafsa for 2020-2021 on March 2nd as I am planning to transfer in the fall. My parents are divorced and I ended up using my mothers information as I am currently living at her house. What I did not realize was that I was supposed to use the parent that I lived the most during the last 365 days. In this case it would be my dad. Is there any way I would be able to switch which parent I used on the fafsa? This is great news to me as my dad makes significantly less than my mom which would result in some form of financial aid for me. I don’t really get any aid with my moms income and she isn’t going to help me pay for school so whatever efc was given with her information ultimately falls on me.
If you are a transfer student and lived with your dad last year, did you get aid last year and was your EFC significantly lower?
If you indeed lived with your dad more in the last year before filing FAFSA, then you should use his income and information.
I am not sure how this is changed on FAFSA.
Did you try calling the school you want to transfer to or the FAFSA helpline?
My advice is to contact the transfer school’s financial aid office to find out how they want you to handle the changes.
I was with my dad during the times that I did not have school which adds up to slightly more than 6 months compared to the time I was at my moms. This is my first time doing fafsa.
I used to be a financial aid director. I have worked with students who made similar mistakes. I would prefer that the student contact me so I could help them correct the mis.
