I applied to UCI with Criminology, Law, and Society as my first choice major, and Business Administration as my second, but I have decided that CLS isn't meant for me. I'm looking toward Business Administration now, but I didn't know that the major was so competitive. :(. Apparently, all the spots have been filled. Is there any way to still get into the Business Administration major? I have a freshman friend from Irvine that was able to change her major to Business Admin, but I don't know too much about the process. Also, would anyone know how many already-enrolled students usually apply to change their major to Business Admin? As of now, I've switched my major to Business Economics, but I really want to be a Business Admin major. Also, another friend of mine warned me against majoring in Business Econ, but he didn't go into much detail as to why. Would someone please tell me about the Business Econ major and why it could have a bad reputation? :E. Thanks, all!

There’s a change of major process but I don’t know too much about it. They have some really ridiculous acceptance rate (for change of major), something like 10 every year. You’ll have to have certain pre-reqs done. Here’s the criteria:

[Paul Merage School of Business](http://www.changeofmajor.uci.edu/PaulMerageSchoolofBusiness.htm)

Also, there’s always a small chance of switching in during orientation or before but don’t count on it. Message your UCI counselor and maybe you can get your major changed right there. Perhaps you have a better shot this year because it seems like UCI seriously underenrolled.

My friend stated that there was either a shortage of Business- Admin majors, or that there were a lot of them graduating, but either way, you got a better chance now as any other. As for getting in, the people did scare me, and the main way to get in seems to be mostly a high GPA. Good luck either way, and hope it works out. Not too sure on the difference between Business Econ and Business Admin

The only reason to warn against bus econ as opposed to bus admin is that unlike bus admin, which is ridiculously easy, bus econ requires a marginal amount of effort.
I’ll let you in on a secret… your major doesn’t matter much to anyone in the corporate world. What does matter is your work experience and your GPA. To an employer, bus admin, econ and bus econ are all basically the same as none of those curriculums actually invoke any technical skills on their own(unless you follow an accounting track, but that’s another story).

If you want to take bus admin courses, just major in econ(which is short, it’s only around 12 classes) and then fill in all your electives with bus admin courses.

Thank you everyone for their answers! And just wondering, does anyone know the difference between the Bus Econ and Econ major at Irvine? Also, which one of the two would you recommend and why? :E

The fact that you had to ask what the difference is should say something… most people don’t know what the difference is - including employers. UCI’s bus econ program has more in common with UCI’s econ program that it does with UCLA’s business econ program or even UCR’s business econ program. When you compare majors it’s NOT an apples to apples comparison, it’s an apples to oranges comparison. For that reason GPA and the reputation of the university you attend generally matter more.

Econ is
Econ 100ABC, Econ 15AB, Econ 122A, & 6 OTHER econ courses of your choice
http://www.economics.uci.edu/ec_undergrad_major_econ

Bus Econ is
Econ 100ABC, Econ 15AB, Econ 25(or mgmt 30a), Econ 122AB, & 7 OTHER econ courses of your choice(that meet a few extra requirements)
see here for details: [Major in Business Economics | UCI Economics](http://www.economics.uci.edu/ec_undergrad_major_bus)

Basically if you follow the Bus Econ route, you can switch to regular econ later, but not so much the other way around(though it’s still definitely possible). I’ll make the arguement that econ and a minor in management or accounting is BETTER than bus econ and no minor if you’re concerned with employability. Two majors and a minor is THREE things, resume readers can count 3, they can’t count a major name.

Again, your major doesn’t matter, to an employer econ and bus econ are the same. I know a guy who graduated in 2.5 years, majored in Econ, took on 4 or 5 internships and networked like crazy and he is doing VERY well for himself. I know another guy who is majoring in business econ and he… well let’s not go there.

I suggest taking the easy way out, getting a HIGH GPA and taking on relevant internships/work experience/extra curricular activities. Have some fun too though. Join a dance club, video game club, rock climbing club, heavy metal club or something else that is FUN. Don’t just be all about work, play too. That is something you won’t regret(also employers like seeing that candidates are well rounded and do more than just work)

Here’s my academic background if you’re interested
major: Quantitative Economics
minors: Statistics, Accounting.

I personally believe that I’d be in roughly the same position if I majored in regular econ and minored in accounting. I might even be better off as my GPA would be higher AND I’d have had more time to focus on other things.

Effective Requirements for Quantitative Economics and Statistics minor(there’s a lot of overlap, if you do QE you SHOULD minor in stats as it’s only two extra classes and they’re relatively easy)

econ lower divs, + Math 3a + Stats 7
Econ 105ABC
Stats 120ABC
Econ 123ABC(C is optional but it covers TWO requirements)
4 econ courses of your choice
Stats 110 + 111
http://www.economics.uci.edu/ec_undergrad_major_quan
http://www.stat.uci.edu/ugrad/minor.php

Again, I would NOT suggest doing QE. Employers don’t care much(though I will admit I am able to compete with math majors and statistics majors for a number of the same jobs/internships which I probably wouldn’t be able to do as a regular econ major)

Bus Admin requirements
mgmt 1, 7, 30a, 30b
mgmt 101, 102, 105, 107, 109, 110
10 other mgmt courses.
bus admin is a relatively long major but the courses are easy.
