Sympathy/Angst Thread

Erm, yes, my Chem SAT II is ridic. And I suck at math. And physics. My being admitted, however, is hardly a mystery to me. I wrote an essay that MIT liked, a lot. And all of my scores, besides Chem, pass MIT’s barrier in the way that it considers admissions.
But I hardly consider my stats to be low. Sure, my Chem score sucks, but I’d been in the class for about 2.5 months at that point.

^I can hardly imagine that post was shot at you, because it didn’t make sense at all. >_>

I thought graduating early would count for something… I guess not.

My sincerest condolences to everyone who has had a death recently. I’ll be honest - I’ve never really had a serious experience with death before. Everyone I care remotely about is still alive. So I guess this is the most important thing in my life right now and it’s agony.

I’ve just been a mess ever since I got rejected from Stanford. I was expecting, but now I just don’t know what to do.

Lolwut? Her Chem was relatively bad, but besides that she had excellent scores.

Yeah, that’s because her SAT was a 2250-2300.

Not sure what you are saying. 2250? Her SAT was 2300 which is probably well above the MIT average.

I just chuckled.

To Conquistador-

No offense is meant by this, but I think the problem was in your EC’s. While it may be that you are very involved in all those extracurriculars, just looking at it, it seemed like there were upwards of 10 clubs you were involved in, and only one in which you had any real leadership position. Unfortunately, admissions officers may have viewed this negatively.

Since you are graduating early, would you consider spending another year at high school and reapplying instead? Maybe that could work?

But regardless, you are in UWisconsin-Madison, which is still a fantastic school (if not quite at the top tier of colleges), so you will be receiving a great education no matter what. You can always try and transfer to, so don’t be too upset

No, thanks for the advice. The thing is, it’s a small school and it’s easy to be really involved in everything. Over half of the clubs I listed don’t have any leadership positions (i.e. Hi-Q which is sort of a Knowledge Bowl thing and kind of a team effort). I didn’t know how to indicate that on my application though. Also, on the application, we didn’t list all of the ECs we were in, did we? Just the ones we were the most involved in.

I don’t know. That’s not really an option for me. A lot of people in the school district have put in so much effort into helping me be the best candidate to get into an Ivy. I’m just not good enough, I guess.

I don’t mean to be condescending or anything either, but I did not do this much work just to get into UW-Madison. It’s a good school, a great school, but I still would have gotten in if I hadn’t done half the things I did.

Still confused…
I tend to say this (or some variation of it) a lot.

Here’s a story for you guys: I slacked off in high school and now I am paying the price. I can’t call schools like Northwestern or UChicago, “reaches”; rather, they are “in your dreams when pigs can fly and everyone in the world loves each other and holds hands and sings songs together” schools.

You are all very intelligent people who are extremely lucky and awesome to have the options for school that you do. And yes, I AM jealous.

^ im sorry :(

I’m sorry. :(

I feel like I’m in the same boat as you though. Not that I necessarily slacked off, but that I didn’t market myself well enough. My application honestly looks pathetic.

You’d hate it a month after getting there… especially UChicago. People tend to forget that college IS still school, and the more prestigous universities WILL be a lot of work. It’s not just all fun and games. That’s why I didn’t want to go somewhere amazing like that. Aren’t you going to Indiana, anyways? Or did you change your mind?

It’s okay Leila, I’m in the same boat.

I unfortunately slacked off way too much in High School. I just never took it seriously, and although my GPA ended up fine (3.36), I have never taken any AP classes and didn’t end up getting an advanced diploma because I had to drop out of my spanish class for personal reasons. Senior year I really woke up and began trying as hard as I can, but not enough to pull me out of my ditch.

It’ll all work out in the end though, you can make up for it in college. Even if you go to community college for a year! I’m not sure if yours does, but my community college has a program where if you get a certain GPA you can get guaranteed admissions. I think it’s something like a 3.6 to transfer to schools like William and Mary and University of Virginia - not that bad! Try talking to your counselor and seeing if your school offers the same deals.

@ Cody2010: Yup, Indiana’s still my top choice so I most likely will be there this fall.

Rejected from Duke.

I’m too dead inside to cry.

Alot of people got rejected/waitlisted to Duke this year.

@Purplequeue: I hate people who can attend VCC in VA and then be able to transfer to such a prestigious school like UVA, which was one of my top choices and being that I’m OOS. :(

I bet everyone here did better than me in HS. My GPA and SAT scores are just mediocre.

What are they?

And I know that a lot of people got rejected/waitlisted from everywhere.
It doesn’t necessarily make me feel better.

If by mediocre you mean 3.8/2050, I did not do better than you.
