Anyone going to Syracuse next year to major in acting/musical theatre? I may be going for musical theatre, so I’m just curious as to who else is out there.

Hi vi1iniscontrivr,
I am going to Syracuse for Acting (early decision candidate). I auditioned for MT with Acting my second choice. But because the acting majors can audition for the musicals and I loved the philosophy there I jumped at the acting offer. I am considering auditioning for MT again once I get there, but I haven't decided that for sure. I kind of like that I have a little more flexibility with the BFA Acting curriculum, I am interested in the dance teams there.

My son is probably going there for MT. Loved the campus and the program seems top notch. He's going to one of the receptions to definitely decide (has one other school as a possible). The level of academics there is higher, plus he likes the atmosphere (sports, etc.) so I'm thinking it will be Syracuse.

I'm glad to know some other people who are going! I just went to an open house reception today, and I was able to observe and acting class and meet some prospective students. I was really bummed when I didn't get into CAP 21, but having gone back to Syracuse again, and looking at the campus, and talking to the heads of the theatre department, I really think I'm going to love it there next year. I'm definitely going there for musical theatre, and I have no regrets. Hope to see you all there in the fall!

I'm so glad you went to the reception! I knew you would come back excited! It really does have a lot to offer! Best of luck!

I am very excited about Syracuse.

I saw many colleges in my junior year and had about 10 additional auditions set up. I did get to audition to a few and got into Buffalo MT, Pace MT, and Nazareth MT(BA) but after getting accepted into Syracuse (acting) I cancelled all the other auditions. People keep asking me if I regret that I am not a MT student but that door isn;t completely shut--I can reaudition this Fall or Winter, I can take applied voice lessons and dance classes AND can audition for the Musicals as a an acting major. So I can't lose. I have no regret.

I too love the sports and the University atmospher is awesome. I plan to audition and hopefully participate in one of the 5 dance teams they offer there. I understand they are incredible. Anyways, I will be at the April 22nd reception.

Hi am going to syracuse this Fall!! Go orange!! I was in summer college last summer and loved the athmosphere. Although I am not going to musical theather I got in into Newhouse. I plan to do a double major broadcast journalism /history. Hope to see you all there .Also i plan on going to summer start

I just saw SU's production of Kiss Me Kate yesterday. It was superb. If anyone is planning to attend in the fall, you should DEFINITELY try to see the show. It was so much fun, the voices were great, and the choreography was spectacular. The show is playing through May 14th. Everyone should see it! It made me very happy to be going there next year.

Awesome!!! Thanks for the info.

What was involved in the MT audition process at Syracruse? We are thinking of looking at that college for D. who is now a HS sophomore..so we have awhile, but may visit this summer.

You have to sing two songs, one uptempo and one ballad, and one has to be from a pre-1960 musical. Also, you have to perform one two-minute monologue and learn a dance combination.

Thanks! Thats good to know.

What other schools are you thinking of?

Hello everyone! This is the first time for me posting on these boards, but I have been visiting for a long time. I got a lot of valuable use out of these boards during the audition process. Now that I have been a student at Syracuse University for a whole year, I have decided that I want to write a little about Syracuse and answer any questions about my audition process here to help anyone like I was helped.

I applied to CCM, Syracuse, Ithaca, Penn State, and U Hart. I got deferred and then rejected from Penn State, rejected from Ithaca and CCM, and accepted to Syracuse and U Hart. I picked Syracuse because I preferred their program and facilities.

My year at Syracuse has simply been amazing. I have grown as a person and as a performer. It was the best, hardest year of my life.

I can answer any specific questions about the program or the audition process. :) Just let me know.

Congrats on everyone's acceptances.

Very cute posting name! I think it is GREAT that you want to give back and help the next group of MT applicants! I am sure you have a GREAT deal to offer.

By chance, from reading your "story" in your post, I am wondering if we know one another from another forum. If so, I think you are the LOVELY girl who has spoken to me several times with lots of helpful advice and information about Syracuse's program and then when we came to the audition in January we met up and my D also took a class that you were in. We both ended up thinking Syracuse's program was wonderful and that the kids in it were really a great group of kids (she spent time with many freshmen in the program). She since got accepted and was thrilled about it but ended up picking NYU. Are you her? and if so, everyone else is very lucky you came here and are offering to give an inside look and perspective.....you're great!

Just hoping some people will take me up on my offer..lol.

But thanks I am glad I helped your daughter :)

:D The internet is a small world after all! But yes, I hope others take you up on it and you definitely helped my D and your enthusiasm and knowledge of the program was a great resource. She has one friend currently in your class, as you know but that was it at the time. She may know some entering next fall. I hope your summer is fantastic and that you IM sometime and fill me in on what is going on in your life.

Meantime, to everyone else considering Syracuse, this young woman is a great resource from "within".

I know someone (who's probably in her thirties now) who went to Syracuse as an acting major, but many years ago and have talked to her about the program a little bit. She said that for the first two years (maybe just one, I don't really remember) the acting majors and MTs take a lot of the same classes. Is this true? What I am basically wondering about is the balance of acting training versus voice and dance training within the BFA MT program, in your opinion. Thanks so much, it's so nice when current students post on this board, it's really helpful. Thanks!

Personally, I find that the balance of acting, voice, and dance is pretty equal. Your first year the acting and MT majors take the same acting classes. They are called your Core classes. But second semester Freshman year, one day a week you have either a MT core or an acting core depending on which major you are. So basically, 3 days a week I had acting classes with 15 other kids who were both Musical Theatre majors and acting majors. Then starting 2nd semester, I had one day a week where I had sort of a Musical Theatre performance type class with just MT majors. The acting students had acting workshops in voice verse, dance, movement, Meisner etc.
Your 2nd year, everyone takes the same scene study requirement and eventually both majors must take voice verse.
So all in all, you get the same acting training as a MT student as the acting majors do.
For 3rd and 4th years, I think it becomes sort of what you want to make of it. There are drama support classes you can take, and they can be acting, or dance, etc. So, if you feel strong in dance and want more acting than you are getting, you can take a course.
I was worried that I wouldn't get enough dance and voice. Syracuse is very acting-oriented. But, contrary to what I feared, I felt like I had plenty of opportunities to sing and dance, and felt that all 3 disciplines were pretty equal. I think that it's sort of what you choose to make of the experience (of course, only if you get core requirements completed)
HTH! :)

Thanks so much for posting about your college! Such a nice idea to help out us high schoolers.

What do you think of the academics at Syracuse? Do they give you enough freedom to take other classes or is it all musical theater? I think Syracuse is beautiful...I'd love to visit this summer. Are there any professors you like that I should try to meet for an interview?
