Syracuse BFA MT

Last year, they said they auditioned 400 for MT and had 20 slots for freshman. They audition more for acting and I am not counting that here. They do not have a cut program. My daughter was admitted and liked what she learned and saw at the program and would have considered it but chose another school in the end. She auditioned around that same time last year. They tell you in late March. They had a nice touch in that the faculty made a personal phone call to inform her before the official letter came in the mail. They also have some nice scholarships. A new thing they have is from a grant, and it involves everyone in the senior MT class going for a semester in NYC. Seemed like an exciting development, in addition to their London Semester.

bump this site up for info to those auditioning soon

so...okay, let me try and phrase this question cohesively....
well...is SU MT program looking for students who are eager to learn and improve and have potential, or are they looking for formed-almost-professionals-who-need-a-litte-more-training?
.....

ToTheStage---Good job, and I believe a fair question. :o

Oops, I had more to say...

Have met with staff from Syracuse in a group discussion situation[not admissions, just info] and they seemed to be encouraging to all levels of "experience". They seemed to be looking for a well-rounded class of students and spoke of their own diverse education backgrounds [not all came from MT undergrad degrees]. My personal interpretation of what I heard was that they are a diverse program to suit a variety of talent and pre-college experiences.

Hope this helps.

At Parents weekend this past week, the major acting teacher, Gerri, answered a parent's question about training - the mother asked what specific acting technique training they looked for; Gerri asked her what her child had studied and she said "nothing" and Gerri said "Good!" She said they train a variety of ways and the main thing they ask new students is why they are there. If they reply that they could not see themselves doing anything else, that is the correct response.

At parents weekend this past week, they said that they auditioned over 900 and accepted 42 (for whole drama department) and that 30 were attending. It was their most competitive department this year. Just as an aside, my son LOVES it there. Lucky choice! The N.Y. semester does seem like a good addition.

Hey, I'm currently a freshman at Syracuse in the musical theatre program, so if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me.

Ps. I love it. The faculty is wonderful. The training is great. Definitely should be high up on your list! Break a leg!

vi1iniscontrivr - I can tell you from reliable sources that the Syracuse audition on 12/2 will be packed with CC families. You might want to show up to visit, at least with the parents if not also the kids.

I'll be there Dec 2! ;)

vi1iniscontrivr-
Can you just give us a general overview speaking to what you like best & least, biggest surprise, best reassurance, why Syracuse is the right place for you, how you came to the decision to attend, and what your preparation/experience was prior to college?

CollegeMom-
Can we somehow merge these two dueling Syracuse threads?
Thank you both.

Bump to get this near the other one.

Hi all. I just merged the two threads that are on the topic of Syracuse. Please be aware that when threads are merged, the posts are in chronological order. Thus, posts from the two threads are interspersed together and so one post may not seem to logically be responding to the one before it. But now we have one thread on this school which is best in the long run.

CollegeMom

Thank you very much!

Hi, I am new to this but I wanted to let everyone know that I live in Syracuse (went to grad school at SU a long time ago!) and would be happy to give info into the area in general to those of you who are considering SU. I have been reading the posts here and finding them very helpful as my D, who is a HS Jr. is starting her search for pre-college and college programs. She is going to apply to SU although being so close to home is not a selling point!
Thanks and I look forward to meeting all of you!

Welcome Evasmom! I'm glad you joined us and I hope you not only find the forum a great resource but also that you continue to post and share your journey with your daughter in this process.

is anyone else auditioning Jan 21??

ignore that question, i totally already asked it haha

Hi Evasmom,
We were in Syracuse Friday, and found out first hand about the Lake Effect. I'm just beginning to thaw now. I was actually crying tears on my drive home through the Berkshires in the blinding snow. I really don't think I'm hearty enough to drive my D back & forth, should she be accepted! Luckily there are other ways in and out that we will definitely research better next time.
I was noticing on the map how close you are to Canada. Is French a popular language in your city? My D is pretty good with it, though she has not had the opportunity to use it much here in CT. (Spanish is big here.)

Melsmom...I hear ya! And I even live in the snowy mountains of Vermont (where it is currently snowing). But that drive you did, CAN be really bad on the nerves. I lucked out last Jan. with Syracuse and Ithaca....sunny weather, thankfully. But in Jan. of '03, I took my other D to visit Cornell, which as you know is also in Ithaca. On the drive back in NY State, at night, the snow was SOOOOOO blinding, I felt like a nervous wreck. I was almost thinking I had to get off the highway some how (not sure how, couldn't see a thing, let alone was fearful to use the brakes) but then it was like squalls and one minute I was in them for like ten min. and then not....it started to get better, then would happen again. It was a long enough drive without the nerves and the longer it took to get home. Unrelated to that, my D chose not to apply to Cornell. Then the second kid applied to Ithaca and Syracuse, and though she liked them and got in, she did not go but there isn't really another way to go back and forth from here to there (no planes/trains) but that drive. I'd have done it but I ain't sad that I'm not :). And I drive in LOTS of snow where I live. That was one drive I haven't forgotten.
