Syracuse or RPI?

For most of my schools i got wait listed and was accepted into Syracuse. I was all set on going to Syracuse and then i got a phone call on Friday from RPI. RPI was not able to offer me a spot for the fall semester but they said i could enroll for the spring semester. Now its really bothering me, and i don't know what to do. I want to major in biology or some sort of science and do something involving forensics. I really like the fact that Syracuse offers a minor in forensics. RPI doesn't offer much classes in forensics but instead it offers some suggested electives for a career in forensics. However it seems like RPI seems like a better choice if i was to major in some sort of science major like biology. I also think that Syracuse seems to be a better place compared to Troy. I'm really confused and i need to respond to both schools as soon as possible. I would really appreciate it if anyone can give me some sort of opinion or advice. Thanks!

I don't know much about RPI, but Syracuse sounds like it has the minor you want. Probably the main question would be how you feel about starting in the spring? It may be easier to start with everyone else where you will make frieinds and get involved right away. I would also think there would be more to do at SU with D1 sports and just more in general in the city. Best of luck with your decision.

Syracuse is opening a brand new state of the art life sciences building in the fall. RPI is an excellent engineering school but Syracuse seems committed to biology and chemistry.

Honestly, in my opinion, I wouldn't attend Syracuse. Not for the academics, but for the surroundings. It's stretched out through the "slums" of the city, and the dorms are hideous. And it's always an uphill walk. I live near here, and it's not a pretty sight to see when you go to a SU game.

Syracuse is a great school and I think you will have a better all-around experience there than at RPI. I wouldn't worry about an uphill walk. Most dorm rooms are rather basic. You can move off-campus after freshman year. Just make sure you are in a good neighborhood.

monty, I have to disagree with everything you said (except I will agree that SU football has had a few rough years). Also, Troy is much more of a "slum" than Syracuse.

I think historically RPI is considered a fair amount stronger academically; especially in the sciences (although moreso chemistry, physics and engineering). Syracuse is most respected in communications.

For the poster who wouldn't attend Syracuse because of the uphill walks, he probably has never been to Troy. RPI is not the prettiest place in the world. I grew up in the tri-city area and Troy is really a depressed town. I don't know enough about the programs the OP is planning on majoring in, so I don't want to offer an opinion on that. I'm just saying, based on aesthetics, Syracuse has got to be nicer than Troy. (although Troy has Ted's Fish Fry - the most amazing fast food in the world)

RPI is mostly guys.

MidwestMom has raised what may be the key aspect of your decision-i.e., if you don't want to study engineering, do you still want to go to a school that's over 70% male?
