Hi!
I’m looking for a good pre med school.
Something with a good pre med track, pre med support/advise program, and premed reputation.
I want a school that gets involved, not just leaves the student.
Also, I want a pre med school that isn’t too difficult. I know that pre med everywhere is difficult, but I also know some schools are notorious for grade deflation, not grading in a curve, or just plain unfair in grading. I want a premed school where success is attainable through hard work, without the stress of grade deflation.
I was wondering if anyone knew if Syracuse, Penn State, and UW Madison have these qualities. And if not, why.
All large state schools will grade on a curve and will weed out a large percentage of their freshman class that intends to go premed.
There’s no such thing as a “premed track”. You need to take 2 semesters each of biology, chemistry, physics, and English, plus 1 semester each of biochemistry, organic chemistry, statistics, calculus, sociology, psychology, a diversity-focused class and preferably a language spoken by an immigrant community (could be Chinese, Urdu, French Creole, Portuguese…) And in each of these classes you need to rank at the top of the class. Hard work is a pre-requisite but may not be sufficient (hard work + a knack for scientific subjects definitely helps in being in the top 20%). Organic Chemistry is a known killer of premed dreams for example.
If you want a more nurturing environment with less weed out, you need to look at LACs but even there hard work may not be sufficient.
You need to choose a major (ANY major, doesnt need to be in the sciences) where you get A’s.
What are your stats?
All schools weed their premed and STEM majors. They have to. They need to get the weaker students to quickly “move on” to other majors and career goals. Schools typically will limit the number of A’s in those 100/200 level BCMP classes.
