Syracuse Whitman School of Management vs Bentley

any thoughts? Bentley offers a Liberal Studies Major which essentially allows you to double major in business and liberal arts with no extra work. The campus is beautiful and is gaining prestige. How would you compare it to Syracuse Whitman School of Management? (job prospects, internships, quality of education, etc.) Which do you think is more prestigious academically, Syracuse Whitman School of Management or Bentley (US News&World Report 2006 rankings: 41 and 47 respectively). I’m curious as to people’s overall impression of the 2 schools both in reputation and academic prestige. Thanks!

As far as prestige and academic excellence go, I would rank them very closely together. If you are looking for work in Boston, however, I would say that Bentley has the definite edge in recognition and opportunities. Besides that, I was just back at the campus for a minute today and it is a beautiful place. For all of these reasons I chose Bentley next year over a few other schools including Bryant and Fairfield. Hope that's helpful.

I think Bentley is great but if I had applied to Syracuse and was accepted, I would definetly attend. I assume that the campus life at Syracuse is a blast, especially during basketball season. That's certainly one thing that Bentley lacks, a nationally ranked and recognized sports program.

In terms of academics, Bentley is good but Syracuse is a little more known. Good Luck!

I believe Syracuse is ranked higher, but Bentley would make a bit more sense if your goal is business. I will be attending Bentley next year also.

I have to disagree, in my school Syracuse is considered a safety school whereas Bentley is considered more prestigious and more of a reach, in other words, and again this is in my school, most could easily get into Syracuse but many were rejected or waitlisted for Bentley. Plus as someone mentioned Bentley is one of a just a few schools expected to really go up in the rankings and eventually far surpass Babson and BU. I personally would take Bentley anyday over Syracuse, I just don't think its looked at the same, most people consider it a non serious party school..........just MY opinion.

no, Kellyconn you are correct in your statement. Syracuse while having a few excellent programs (Communications in the Newhouse School I believe) is not overall as strong a school as Bentley. Sure it may be more well known because of its Division I athletics but since Bentley is smaller I think the student body would be more uniform in their academic levels.

Secondly, in my school Bentley was also viewed as one of the tougher schools to get into and I know many people that were waitlisted or rejected but they got into Syracuse. Where are you in Connecticut?

Lastly, Bentley is expected to go up sharply in the rankings. They have completely re-done their library with a $16 million renovation and the gym was recently fully redone as well. Bentley's an all-business school like Babson but what makes it more appealing to many (and this will continue to become more apparent) is that while not being as well known or highly ranked for business, Bentley does not solely base its curriculum around one major the way Babson does with entrepreneurship.

Bentley's location is also highly desirable. It takes you away from the rut and distraction of the city and is in a nice suburb. Prudential Center can be clearly seen from campus and the technology integrated into the curriculum is wonderful. There are about 4,000 undergrads and a full range of Division 2 athletic programs including a football team, so the size appeals more to the typical applicant than Babson which has about 1,800 undergrads, Division 3 sports and no football team and is a bit farther outside Boston.

Just look at the new Businessweek rankings that placed Babson 28th, BU 30th and Bentley 31st. Bentley is just getting started in their campus improvements and will be hiring a new president in the coming year. It was named a Hot School for 2004 by Kaplan/Newsweek and is better than both Babson and BU for accounting & finance.

Clearly, it is on the rise and give it another 3-4 years and it will be tougher to get into than Babson and more recognized

Thanks to everyone who replied and gave their valuable input. I ultimately selected Bentley and have no regrets with this decision. I look forward to seeing all of you at Bentley in the fall! Thanks again.
