tablet pc

anybody bought a tablet PC? please share your experience with us...does it recognizes your handwriting well? and is it really easy to write on it?

I am a science major and I am considering one, since all I do is write equations(no use for a laptop)

Thanks

I bought my tablet in may and I love it. The one I have is the Fujitsu convertible. I did an incredible amount of research on tablet computers and can answer just about any question you have. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.

The fujitsu is one of the ones working on windows xp for tablet which is really good. Basically its the windows we all know and (sort of) love. You also have to get microsoft office for tablet otherwise its all sort of pointless. Everything is the same except there are cool tablet features added onto everything which I like cause then you don't have to re-learn how to use all the programs. As for the writing recognition it is amazing. How it works is you hover the pen over something that you can write on or in and a little input panel comes up. You can choose to write words in which case you write like you would on paper (when you get to the end of the line you move down to the next one), as you are writing it shows what it thinks you wrote word by word so if one word is of you just tap it and it will give you suggestions or you can change it letter by letter. It is really really acurate though so you wont need to do that much. Even if you write really really sloppy cursive it still gets what you write. Also if it doesn't get it or you miss-wrote you can write over it and it will re-recognize it and change it. My friends and I now have a game where you just scribble and see what it comes up with (ya were bored) The second way to input is letter by letter (think some kind of aplication form:llll_<-thats what it looks like) this is good for websites and things that aren't words. The third way is a little onscreen keyboard where you just tap the letters.

For someone who writes equations and stuff I would say that this would be really good because you can write notes in word but it doesn't have to be in text plus people who don't have tablets can read what you've written. For example I was filling out an application for and it was in a word file so i filled it out in text then I signed at the bottom using the pen feature.

I could talk forever about this but just two more things: 1) mine is a convertible which means its a laptop with a keyboard and everything but the screen flips around for it to become a tablet. This is good cause you want to be able go back to your room and type papers and not have to do everything in handwriting (for me this is a must cause i get really bad writers cramp and also i type really fast). 2) I don't care what you've heard about great deals on these things but there is no such thing. If you buy a tablet for less than 2500 it is going to be a piece of ****. It seems that the way the cheap manufacturers have cut costs is by firing all their quality control people. People have reported being sent re-placement after re-placement each having different hardware problems right out of the box (for some this has happened as many as six times) also fujitsu is one of the best out there for the writing component. When you write with some of them your writing doesn't look anything like it would on paper which is a problem. Keep in mind that they will all say they have good handwriting recognition cause they're all using the same system! If you are going to use it well and you have the money it is definitely definitely worth it. If you have any more questions about the fujitsu or practically any other tablet, I know them all so just ask.

wow..thanks! i have made a decision: i will buy the cheapest of reasonable desktop PC and work so I can then buy a tablet.it just seem perfect for science...
if you don't mind, please put a post with your first lecture note-taking. I am very curious how does it behave in a lecture. you know, as far as I've heard, prof tend to speak fast and so you have to keep up too.
as for the price, it is such a big difference from what I've seen . chech this :
<a href="http://www.bizrate.com/buy/products__att259--43051-,cat_id--462,keyword--tablet%20pc.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.bizrate.com/buy/products__att259--43051-,cat_id--462,keyword--tablet%20pc.html</a>
on bizrate, i found tablets for 1200$, which is pretty far away from 2500$.
can you tell me the specs? proc, hard disk, RAM...&all
well, I just hope that until I get my money the technology will have time to develop even further, and hopefully:P the price will go down. i guess I'll just have to see.
in the end, thanks:)

the hp tc4200 starts at $1599 , the gateway starts at $1399, and the toshiba r10/15 starts at $1259. just because its less than 1500 doesnt mean its less quality(its just not as fast)...not from my experience but from posts i've read about refurbs and used tablets. <a href="http://www.tabletpcbuzz.com/forum%5B/url%5D">www.tabletpcbuzz.com/forum</a> is a good place to look for all you need to know about tablets especially this old thread about students using tablets:
<a href="http://tabletpcbuzz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=10028%5B/url%5D">http://tabletpcbuzz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=10028</a></p>

I don't agree with that. Having personal experience with each of those tablets I can tell you that there is a lot more wrong with them than speed, tablet pc buzz is a really good way to find out stuff, but unfortunately you can't get a lot of advice b/c no one really consistently goes on it, at least in my experience. Yes the tablet prices are going down and hopefully soon my quote of 2500 will become at least 1800 but I am honestly telling you that the ones for 1250 etc. have serious input and basic hardware problems. Here's a site that compares the specs of a lot of them <a href="http://www.tabletpc2.com/Compare.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.tabletpc2.com/Compare.htm</a> the second page has hp, etc.
The main reason I would suggest the fujitsu is that it is fully customizable so you could actually get it for about 1300 if you don't want anything like extra ram, memory, a cd drive, or other stuff like that. Its just that for most people they want an average package. Mine cost a lot mor because its going to be my only computer for many years and I wanted to be sure it would last.

Also I wont have a lecture until early september but i'll be sure to post my thoughts. I imagine that it will be a lot like taking regular notes: if I feel the need to write down everything the professor says it will suck but for average note taking it will be good. Also something I really recommend getting for any student especially ones with a tablet pc is the agilix go-binder, its basically an entire notebook (the paper kind) inside your computer. you can read more about it at <a href="http://www.gobinder.com%5B/url%5D">www.gobinder.com</a>, it is just as awesome as it sounds, I have been using it all summer to organize stuff for work and notes about registering for classes and all kinds of stuff like that.
