So I've got a gaming laptop. That is just about as mobile as a desktop on campus... So I was thinking of just getting a tablet for notes with a BT typing peripheral. What I'm thinking is that I'll get an ipad and dish out a few extra bucks on apps and stuff... but it should do what I need it to do right? I can type as fast as I can write on a keyboard so I know that won't be a problem. I know there are apps that have handwriting recognition built in that i can export to text (if I ever need to draw pictures and text at the same time). I can take pictures of anything I need to in terms of both paper to read and file away for later or pictures of something to take notes on. I'm pretty sure thats all I need... right?
I feel like I'm missing something... because that does all that I need it to do and is a lot cheaper then a laptop.
Did I forget anything??
Thanks CC!

You won’t have access on Office for Mac on an iPad, I don’t think. I don’t have much experience with iPads so I can’t say for sure. If you’re fine with that, then you’re good to go.

You don’t need to have a laptop for class. It usually is more distracting to have one in class, anyways.

Yes it will work fine. The iPad is an excellent choice and I’m looking into it as well. If you buy an iPad from Apple now, you will get a $50 iTunes card since you’re a student. That $50 can go towards buying note taking apps and a few iWork apps. I would recommend you get a case that supports a nice angle, a BT keyboard and invest in a nice stylus.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

If you on a budget (like I am right now). Buy the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 (7’’ screen).

Im going to buy on myself in a few weeks. WAY cheaper than a lame ipad.

Generally speaking (with no difference based on an intended major), yes an iPad for in-class would be functional enough for you to use. If you need to type in length or use a full office suite, then you desktop will be there for you. If you go the iPad route, I would also suggest getting a PDF reader app, note taking app like Notes +, iWorks apps (Pages, Keynote, Numbers), BT Keyboard, and a nice stylus.

The $50 gift card from Apple is more than enough to buy the productivity apps you’ll need for class. Use a could service or email to drop all your notes and files onto your desktop periodically so you can keep as much space on the iPad free as possible (possibly buying the cheaper storage amount one).

However, if you’re willing to consider tablets other than Apple’s iPad, then there certainly are some out there that have advantages and disadvantages over the iPad.

Otherwise the desktop/iPad combo are definitely workable and complimentary.
