Taboo Essay Topics?

As the thoughts of college admissions begin to consume my daily life, I've been thinking of what to write on the essays. I looked at the Common App, and the first prompt caught my attention.

"Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you."

Three big ideas popped into my head. Three experiences that have brought a significant impact on my life. However, these experiences separately deal with drugs, violence, and brushes with death. I know my personal thoughts on these events are strong, and that I'll be able to write a unique essay with any of the three ideas. My main issue is what impression the essay readers will take from the essay. That I'm reckless? That I'm a pothead? I'm not, but that doesn't mean I haven't experimented. Should I write about these topics or should I find a more "orthodox" topic?

Don’t write about experimenting with drugs.

Ok I was expecting that response…but what about the other two areas? Or should I find something less controversial?

I think it depends on the institution you are applying to. Small conservative school? Large liberal institution? It all depends.

I think that the other areas could be okay. As is often the case, it’s not the topic, it’s what you do with the topic. It is hard to say without seeing where you go with it.

I don’t think any of these topics would be considered unusual . I would write about something more positive ,unless you overcame something horrific .

It really all depends on how you write it.
