taboo?

Um, public school computer science teacher speaking here....

The grownups of the world take computer data access attempts VERY seriously. While you may think that it's a "no harm done, no property damaged" prank, I guarantee you that at our school, in our system, you WOULD get suspended, at the least. Worst case scenario - criminal charges and expulsion.

If you really want to pull a prank, get your district or school's student code of conduct, and find something funny to do that DOESN'T VIOLATE THE CODE OF CONDUCT.

OTOH, it sounds like you've already thought of something you want to do, and you want assurance that if no one ends up in the hospital and property isn't damaged, Stanford won't care. No one here can guarantee that.

Like I said, I teach high school. In a magnet for bright, able kids. They make stupid choices all the time, too, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised by the fact that a kid would risk his or her dream school on a prank. Not surprised, but always a little sad when those choices lead to the natural consequences.

Thank you mom2three. I was wondering if a voice of reason would step up here. The idea of "hypothetically" hacking into a school website goes beyond a prank in my opinion. If not illegal, it's pretty darn close.

Wasn't it Stanford that rescinded a bunch of acceptances a few years ago because students hacked the admissions site "just to check" their statuses a little early?

My guess is that the top schools don't want kids who think that computer hacking is a trivial thing. Like I said before, the grownups of the world take their data and its security very seriously. I don't expect kids to "get it." But maybe one or two might take my word for it.

I think the whole thing is a bad idea.

don't be weak. do it.

Do it

Stanford won't reject you.

Don't get caught

If you're dumb enough to get caught, Stanford should reject you.

i read that mike D got expelled form Vassar for pulling some prank....

Mom2three is right, I would really think of something else. Depending on what, how, etc, it could be a crime, possibly a felony. That would end things. Also, hacking is not considered OK these days.
