I love the 8:30AM start time and wish they had it at Cate (my daughter’s school). St. George’s (my son’s school) implemented an 8:30AM start a few years ago it has been very successful. One of the many benefits apparently is a reduction in sports-related injuries, because the kids are getting more/better sleep.
I love what I hear about Tabor - but they don’t have a swim team, correct?
Correct no swim team.
I find it curious that a school that administers a swim test - in the harbor - doesn’t have a swim team! But it doesn’t seem to be an ISL sport. They added Volleyball this year and V and JV are competing in ISL.
There is a swimming club - AAU? - in the area and we met a couple students swimming for them.
Darn. Swim test is great! If I ran a school, I’d be requiring it too! Bummer no swim team. Is ISL their prep school league?
I’ll look into the USA Swimming team but probably hard to do as a boarder.
Yes, Tabor rejoined the Independent School League (St Paul’s departed). To us this was a strong plus as PG’s aren’t allowed. The ISL schools develop the kids coming up through their programs.
I agree with the ISL. I don’t think it’s fair that PG’s bump other kids off a roster, when they are older and just looking for scholarships. Is that mostly a hockey thing?
Depends upon the school, but no, it’s used in other sports as well.
Tabor is a unique school & always was. Had friends that went there and we sailed for fun in college- one went on to become a boat designer— he developed a passion for design, engineering, art, tech — all started at Tabor in an environment that was really encouraging…from what they tell me now, that creative spirit is still there— plus the superb sailing programs— strong alumni network for jobs and internships, also :-c
Between Tabor and Westtown, which school would you recommend?
They are really different! Both are great schools but have quite different locations, student bodies, and vibes. I would recommend that you visit both and pay attention to where you feel most comfortable.
My daughter is home for Thanksgiving Break, so got some feedback.
8:30 start time is popular, and coaches claim injury rate is lower. Definitely less stress.
She said compared to Brand X, the teachers do an excellent teaching job in the 75 minute blocks.
Big winter parents weekend focused on Juniors Feb 16-17. If any of you have questions about the school, we can ask them then. We don’t plan on pestering the admissions staff but others will be around.
For the cautiously optimistic: Revisit days are April 3,5,6.
How does Tabor send out its decision letters? By snail mail only?
yep, but sometimes it can arrive faster than you think.
Just to put it out there, I have a cousin at Tabor and he loves it! Great marine science program!
In past decisions come by snail mail. Ours was there when we arrived home from school that day.
Even rejections? That’s kinda weird, but also disappointing. I’m an international student, so Tabor’s decision would probably be the last to arrive since all my other schools are via e-mail or online portal.
Apart from that, I love Tabor! It’s probably on my list of top 3 schools. The Marine Biology program is AM A ZING! Everything about it is just wonderful!
