Tabor Academy

From website: 'this year students will hear the news of their decision on March 10 via email, as well as through the mail. ’

That’s great! Thanks.

During Parents Weekend we had a briefing on new initiatives at the MAN (Marine & Nautical) Center.

Tabor has the lead role in a new initiative with Wood’s Hole Oceanographic, giving them access to the most sophisticated research instruments available. The Trustees have budgeted for a research vessel (Tabor Boy is used for research also: this will be a lobsterboat sized vessel for local use). They have approval for a dock from the Marine Center to the harbor. Finally there is a new initiative with a research organization on the Cape to study plant populations in the tidal zone (since rising sea levels may impact near shore vegetation) using drones.

Through their MakerSpace and pre-Engineering courses, they’ve also designed and built robotic rafts to survey water temps and clarity at different points in Sippican Bay, and UAV’s to photograph the harbor bottom.

Anyone from this forum attending the 4/3 Revisit?

After revisit, G jr. picked Tabor over four other schools. We toured with a group of four other parents, and their kids had already committed.

Congrats @Garandman !! I’ll probably be contacting you in the future, if DD keeps Tabor on her list! And depending on which sports G jr participates in, y’all may run into buuznkid! ISL rocks!

He is planning to play Football, Hockey and Lacrosse.

Over the summer, parents received notification that the formal dress code had been changed to one more contemporary/practical.

We have two kids at TA and they - and we - couldn’t be happier. Their Advisors are on top of their progress. The new schedule (8:30am start time and 75 minute blocks) first implemented last year is working well. We are extremely impressed with the caliber of teaching, compared to the school our oldest left.

Rejoining the ISL is a positive for us, living in Boston, as their “Away” games are nearby. We drive down in just under an hour for home contests.

This weekend is an “Arts, Athletics, and Innovation” open house at Tabor.

These are great events to take your 7th and 8th graders to. The 9th grade Fall gets very busy, so visiting some schools in advance gives your child a feel for what schools look like and feel like.

Marion is on Buzzards Bay, just off I195.

^^I love these kinds of events. A really low key way to visit a school.

I wish we were close enough to attend events like this…instead, we will randomly pick a summer week and stealthily slip onto campus, observing unnoticed. Lol.

Hard to get a feel for the culture and community when you can only visit during the summer…

I watched the three videos. Great Head of School. Really nice kids. About two-thirds boarding & one-third day students. 515 students total.

When I had my interview, the AO said that she had left her job at the boarding school she went to and moved to work at Tabor. Wow.

^^ Fwiw, Not an uncommon path for a professional in this field. Many folks start at their alma mater or end up back there at some point but ultimately get a chance to move up the career ladder (and/or make more money and/or live closer to friends and family) by going to another school.

We found most folks who worked in admissions had gone to BS, if not the one where they were working.

Agreed, almost all the teachers and AOs I spoke to had gone to boarding school, grew up at a boarding school, or their spouse had done one of those. BS life is VERY unique for an adult/teacher and it is definitely not for everyone. I know several teachers who opted out because they hated it. That means BS’s have an incentive to hire people who “get it” from the outset.

^^ another agreement. Most AOs we met had gone to BS and were not working at their alma mater. Does that mean they thought the school was at was better than their alma mater? Highly doubtful. Did they think their job opportunity at the new school was likely better than at their alma mater? Highly probable.
But Tabor, IMO, is a great school with a lot of unique offerings…so let’s not lose sight of the purpose of this thread…

The Head of School called a surprise school day off tomorrow. Early cerfew tonight, late breakfast, and they’ll pick up again on Friday with Family Weekend.

Kids have been working hard so it should be a nice break.

The school states on their website that day students represent about 25% of the student body.

@buuzn3, there is a very active summer camp at Tabor, and there is virtually always someone there from the admissions staff. They bring in day students to give campus tours. So by all means arrange for an interview and campus tour. My daughter toured the campus in August and the girl who gave the tour turned out to be her Dotm Proctor the next year!

@CaliMex, is there something that prevents you from visiting during the school year? Tabor is about an hour’s drive from Boston and 45 minutes from TF Green Airport (Providence, RI). It is quite common to see families on Columbus Day weekend visiting as many as six schools in the area.
